Role Overview

Join Ventia and make a meaningful contribution as a Custody Officer supporting the Western Australia Department of Justice. This full-time onsite position in Burrup, WA, involves safeguarding individuals in custody, ensuring their dignity and wellbeing, and facilitating efficient justice system operations. Your work will span court security, prisoner transport, and secure medical escort duties.

Training and Compensation

The role includes comprehensive paid training with 5 weeks of fully paid instruction before operational duties commence. No prior custody experience is necessary. Compensation starts at $27.35 per hour during training, increasing to $29.50 per hour afterward, and rises to $30.93 per hour after 12 months upon completion of Certificate III in Correctional Practice, which Ventia fully funds.

  • Guaranteed minimum working hours under an Enterprise Agreement.
  • Enhanced overtime rates: after 7.6 daily hours; early mornings before 5 AM; evenings after 7 PM; weekends at 175% (Saturdays) and 200% (Sundays) base rate.
  • Annual regional allowance totaling $10,189 distributed fortnightly.
  • Meal allowances during shifts exceeding 9.6 hours or overnight stays.
  • On-call allowance of $25.73 per day as applicable, and $3 per hour extra for Officer In Charge responsibilities.
  • Paid travel and allowances for approved regional assignments.
  • Reimbursement of parking expenses where relevant.

  • Five weeks annual leave for shift employees.

Job Responsibilities

  • Ensuring safe supervision and transport of detainees.
  • Maintaining security throughout court sessions.
  • Performing welfare assessments and preserving duty of care.
  • Managing challenging incidents with professionalism and calmness.
  • Recording accurate and detailed reports and documentation.
  • Collaborating effectively with a supportive operational team.

Candidate Requirements

  • Availability for full-time training Monday to Friday, 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM.
  • Commitment to complete a 12-month Certificate III in Correctional Practice.
  • Australian citizenship or permanent residency status.
  • A respectful, resilient, and professional demeanor.
  • Capability to pass pre-employment medical, fitness, and background screenings.
