CSSD and Endoscopy Decontamination Operative

About the Role

UPMC Kildare Hospital is seeking a dedicated CSSD operative responsible for the cleaning, disinfection, packing, and sterilization of medical instruments through both manual and mechanical techniques. The role ensures the delivery of high-quality sterile instruments to support safe patient care.

Primary Responsibilities

• Perform thorough decontamination of used medical instruments using mechanical processes.
• Inspect and function-test instruments; promptly report any anomalies to the CSSD Manager.
• Assemble, inspect, and pack instrument sets and equipment for sterilization procedures.
• Load and unload autoclaves, ensuring sterilization of instrument packs.
• Examine sterilized packs for integrity before storage, checking for any damage or moisture.
• Distribute and organize sterilized equipment in designated areas appropriately.
• Monitor autoclaves and washer/disinfectors for operational parameters and malfunctions.
• Conduct scheduled daily and weekly testing of sterilization machines and related equipment.
• Maintain accurate logs and records with proper signatures following departmental and EU guidelines.
• Archive documentation according to national and European legal requirements.
• Manage stock control and shelving of sterile supplies, assist with raw material handling.
• Adhere to infection prevention controls and standard safety precautions, including proper use of PPE.
• Report incidents or accidents to management per hospital policy.
• Engage in manual or computerized traceability of reusable medical devices within quality systems.
• Complete monthly hygiene audits and maintain department cleanliness standards.
• Communicate effectively with the wider multidisciplinary team, maintaining a culture of patient safety and quality.
• Act as a mentor for new technicians and actively pursue personal upskilling and training opportunities.
• Follow uniform and general hospital policies including possible temporary redeployment to other areas based on patient needs.
• Support hospital quality and safety initiatives including audits aligned with JCI and Lean methodologies.
• Assist in health and safety compliance, attending mandatory training annually.
• Maintain strict confidentiality and safeguard patient and staff information in compliance with data protection policies.

• No formal qualifications are required for this position.
• Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and manage multiple duties with strong attention to detail.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Capability to meet the physical demands of the role to support service requirements.
• Commitment to ensuring patient safety in all procedures within the CSSD.
• Flexibility and motivation to identify challenges and implement practical solutions.

Compensation and Benefits

The salary for this position ranges from €33,804 to €41,260 annually, based on a 39-hour workweek.
