Crime Analyst I - Crime Analysis & Intelligence Division (CAID)

Position Overview

This role supports the entire command structure of the Harris County Sheriff's Office by providing daily analytical services focused on public safety, resource allocation, and crime reduction efforts. The position involves collecting, extracting, and analyzing data to guide performance evaluation and develop crime mitigation strategies. Candidates should possess foundational skills in crime analysis as outlined below.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

• Work collaboratively with other analysts and staff to conduct routine data gathering and analysis across multiple crime categories.
• Assist in creating crime bulletins, jail statistics, use-of-force reports, and reports on prolific offenders.
• Manage the collection and forwarding of crime bulletins from neighboring law enforcement agencies; analyze and comment on relevant content related to county safety and officer risk assessment.
• Contribute to the production of trend analyses and informational bulletins to aid patrol, investigative, and command units.
• Support the generation of reports and presentations distributed to media, community organizations, and businesses.
• Aggregate data and prepare clear oral and written presentations highlighting crime patterns, series, and trends.
• Gain insight into crime reduction methodologies to assist law enforcement and criminal justice leadership.
• Search multiple datasets to identify patterns, suspects, or operational priorities.
• Inform personnel about research methods regarding offender, victim, and modus operandi patterns.
• Analyze evidence and case information to recognize similar crimes and patterns.
• Establish and maintain data-sharing protocols with regional law enforcement and other justice stakeholders.
• Conduct background research on suspects utilizing computer systems and contacts within agencies.
• Analyze and interpret statistics from department and external reports to issue timely notifications when necessary.
• Respond to inquiries from external sources about crime activities and trends in accordance with agency policies.
• Support other analysts with research projects related to crime identification and prevention strategies.

Qualifications and Requirements

• Must meet one of the following education and experience pathways: a bachelor's degree or 60 college credits in relevant fields plus at least one year of related experience, or four years of analyst experience in law enforcement, military, government, or similar environments.
• Experience must involve analytic duties such as data collection, validation, research, reporting, or presenting information to influence operational decisions.
• Knowledge of crime analysis fundamentals, intelligence-led policing techniques, and descriptive statistics.
• Proficiency with computer operating systems and database management, preferably with experience using police reporting systems.
• Familiarity with research methods, criminal justice practices, investigative techniques, and organizational structures.
• Skills in data research, problem-solving, critical thinking, database management, and developing data recording systems.
• Ability to prepare and deliver clear oral and written reports, manage multiple projects, and effectively use Microsoft Office Suite.

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Criminal Justice, Data Analytics, or a related discipline.
• Three or more years in an analytical role related to law enforcement.
• Experience with RMS, CAD, GIS mapping tools, Power BI, Tableau, or SQL.
• Completion of crime analysis coursework or IACA training.

Work Environment and Conditions

• This position operates chiefly in a typical office environment utilizing computers, phones, and technical equipment.
• Work involves primarily sedentary duties with occasional requirement to lift items up to 10 pounds.
• Work schedule varies with shift work across all days of the week based on departmental needs; days off and shifts may fluctuate accordingly.
