Job description

Role Overview

Piha Surf Life Saving Club, a prominent and successful surf sports organization in New Zealand, is seeking a dedicated Club Coach to enhance their competitive lifesaving programs. The club boasts a strong senior squad, an expanding junior surf program, and motivated masters athletes eager to improve and compete.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan and implement weekly training sessions encompassing ocean, pool, and land-based activities for both senior and junior squads.
  • Coach across several surf lifesaving disciplines, including Pool, Board, Ski, Surf Swim, Ironman, Beach Sprint, Beach Flags, and Strength & Conditioning.
  • Exhibit enthusiasm for surf lifesaving, supporting lifeguard patrols and developing confident, capable competitive lifeguards.

Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate has a passion for all aspects of surf lifesaving — competition, patrolling, community, and environment. Responsibilities include coaching senior athletes, nurturing junior and youth development, assisting masters athletes, and fostering growth in novice competitors. They will also contribute significantly to upskilling volunteer coaches and building a training program that is enjoyable, inclusive, and high-performing.

Working Conditions and Offerings

This position is ideally full-time, but flexible arrangements are available such as part-time work (20 hours per week from April to October, 40 hours per week from November to March) or job-sharing with a senior coach to develop an assistant coach for a sustainable long-term role. Remuneration is competitive and will be discussed directly with applicants. The role is open to collaboration in designing a schedule that benefits both the club and the selected candidate.
