Role Overview

The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) serves as a pivotal member of the executive leadership team, guiding the company’s mission, values, and strategic objectives. Reporting to both ownership and executives, the CFO will oversee the company’s financial governance, including strategy, accounting, treasury, taxation, capital allocation, budgeting, forecasting, insurance, risk management, business analytics, financial systems, and operational finance processes across several provinces and the US. The CFO is expected to provide actionable, data-focused advice supporting profitable growth, operational responsibility, and sustainable long-term business success.

Additionally, the CFO will advance the company’s evolution by conceptualizing and implementing sophisticated data-driven, automation, and AI-enabled tools to enhance products, services, business processes, and systems with practical operational grounding.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead formulation and upkeep of a multi-year financial strategy supporting growth, capital planning, acquisitions, contract opportunities, and shareholder value.
  • Ensure accurate and compliant financial reporting and internal controls that meet federal, provincial, municipal, tax, and regulatory requirements.
  • Manage treasury activities including cash flow, debt facilities, banking, bonding, insurance, credit risk, investments, and liquidity planning.
  • Work with external advisors on corporate tax planning, shareholder taxes, estate/succession planning, trusts, and company structure considerations.
  • Identify and manage various risks encompassing financial, operational, contractual, insurance, compliance, cyber security, and business continuity.
  • Oversee finance systems and collaborate with IT to enhance data quality, reporting automation, analytics, system controls, and cybersecurity.
  • Prepare executive and stakeholder communications translating complex financial data into practical business recommendations.
  • Lead, develop, and manage finance, accounting, and related teams with clear standards, goals, reporting expectations, and succession plans.
  • Partner cross-functionally with departments such as operations, commercial, legal, HR, safety, and procurement to optimize decision-making and performance monitoring.
  • Engage with ownership, executives, lenders, insurers, auditors, tax advisors, and partners on financial performance and business risks.

Executive Leadership Functions

  • Advise ownership and executive leadership on financial strategies, capital allocation, risk, growth, and acquisitions.
  • Develop a finance function that offers accurate, timely, and business-oriented reporting including potential financial planning & analysis (FP&A) capabilities.
  • Coordinate finance, IT, and risk management priorities aligned with overall company strategy.
  • Conduct comprehensive business planning including budgeting, forecasting, capital expenditure, controls, audit readiness, and external reporting.
  • Exhibit hands-on leadership promoting clear expectations, accountability, performance management, and practical processes.
  • Promote a data-driven culture with enterprise-wide analytics and real-time performance dashboards.
  • Monitor industry trends and advise leadership on strategic implications.
  • Drive cultural unity across national operations fostering open communication, creativity, and collaboration.
  • Assess and manage merger/acquisition targets and customer contract negotiations.

Ideal Candidate Profile

  • Minimum of 10 years in senior financial leadership, managing complex organizations including accounting, budgeting, treasury, tax, reporting, and analysis.
  • Prior CFO or equivalent position experience with responsibility for multi-division and multi-jurisdictional finance operations.
  • Proven ability to formulate and execute strategic financial plans aligned with business strategies.
  • Experience in complex industries such as manufacturing, logistics, transportation, or material processing; fleet management expertise desirable.
  • Background in privately owned, entrepreneurial or family-operated enterprises balancing strategic advisory with hands-on execution.
  • Strong leadership skills in team building, accountability, and performance improvement.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Canadian financial regulations, taxation, insurance, bonding, and banking.
  • Experience managing rapid and transformational organizational change.
  • Proficiency in pricing and negotiating large contracts, capital projects, acquisitions, and financing agreements.
  • Advanced analytical skills for interpreting financial and operational data and providing actionable insights.
  • Effective communication with diverse stakeholders both financial and non-financial.
  • Adaptability to company culture and ability to instill robust financial methodologies and discipline.
  • High emotional intelligence emphasizing people management during change.
  • Approachable, hardworking leader with strong stakeholder engagement and capacity to challenge constructively.
  • Entrepreneurial mindset with visible field presence and collaborative spirit.

Qualifications

Relevant professional accounting designation such as CPA required; advanced qualifications like MBA or CFA are valued assets.
