Position Overview

Aneurin Bevan University Health Board invites applications for the role of Assistant Transfusion Practitioner (Band 6). This part-time (30 hours per week) permanent position supports the promotion and enhancement of safe transfusion practices by delivering education and training aligned with legislative and national/local guidelines.

The post involves engaging with all Health Board sites and providing comprehensive training to healthcare professionals involved in the transfusion process. The role reports to the Transfusion Practitioners within the Hospital Transfusion Team and requires independent workload management. The incumbent will represent the Health Board at internal and external meetings, including collaborations with the Welsh Blood Service.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and deliver training programs covering all aspects of blood transfusion and remote issue systems.
  • Coordinate and facilitate competency assessments and transfusion-related education for all staff involved in transfusion.
  • Monitor traceability and report transfusion-related incidents, including mandatory reporting to the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA).
  • Conduct both local and national clinical audits related to transfusion practices.
  • Promote excellence in transfusion standards through clear communication across diverse clinical teams.

Candidate Requirements

  • Registered Nurse or another clinical healthcare professional (e.g., midwife, Operating Department Practitioner) with degree-level qualification and relevant professional registration (NMC or HCPC).
  • Experience in transfusion within clinical or laboratory environments, with knowledge of national clinical guidelines and standards on blood transfusion.
  • Post-registration professional experience including understanding clinical audit processes.
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams) and strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Well-organized, confident, persuasive, with interpersonal and problem-solving skills, able to work autonomously and collaboratively.
  • Ability to travel promptly across Health Board locations; flexible to occasional evening or weekend shifts based on service needs.
  • Welsh language skills are desirable but not mandatory; applications in Welsh are equally welcome.

Preferred Qualifications and Experience

  • Teaching, assessing, or mentoring experience; PGCE or teaching qualifications an advantage.
  • Familiarity with audit processes, MHRA and UKAS standards, Blood Safety & Quality Regulations (2005), and serious transfusion incident reporting agencies such as SHOT.
  • Post-registration transfusion qualifications or mentorship certifications.

Additional Information

The Health Board values diversity and encourages applications from individuals of all protected characteristics, including disabled and neurodiverse candidates and those from the Armed Forces Community. Applications in Welsh will not be disadvantaged.

Applicants requiring adjustments for participation in the recruitment process or alternative document formats (such as large print or braille) are encouraged to contact the listed manager or recruitment team for support.

All staff must comply with the smoke-free workplace law on Health Board grounds.

The salary scale for Band 3 will be adjusted in line with the NHS Agenda for Change pay award effective from April 2026, implemented in August 2026.

Early applications are advised as the vacancy may close at any time or be filled through internal redeployment.
