Overview
Ammunition Technicians within the Canadian Armed Forces hold responsibility for managing all ammunition and explosive inventories, along with overseeing ammunition and explosives safety initiatives. Their duties extend to technical inspections, testing, maintenance, modifications, and the safe disposal of all military ammunition and explosive devices.
Main Duties
- Advise on safety protocols related to ammunition and explosives
- Oversee proper storage of ammunition and explosives
- Coordinate preparation and shipment processes
- Maintain both permanent installations and field setups
- Execute render safe procedures and disposal of explosive ordnance
- Certify ammunition and scrap materials to various classification levels
- Manage disposal of improvised explosive devices
- Operate specialized equipment to support operational needs
Work Environment
Technicians work in diverse environments which can vary significantly. Initial postings are generally at ammunition facilities to build foundational expertise. Upon completing training, postings may be anywhere within Canada or internationally during deployments.
Regular Force members can expect relocation during their career, while Primary Reserve members work largely close to their Reserve unit part-time without relocation requirements.
Entry Requirements and Training
- No prior experience required; recruiters assist in matching interests and attributes
- Minimum education: completion of Grade 10 or Secondary 4 (Quebec equivalent); foreign education assessed
- Initial training includes Basic Military Qualification at the Canadian Forces Leadership and Recruit School (physically demanding)
- Five months training on ammunition handling and logistics at Canadian Forces Logistics Training Centre, Borden, Ontario
- Three months of Explosive Ordnance Disposal training covering disposal techniques, range clearance, investigation, and field operations
- Eight weeks training focused on safety programs, technical services, accident investigation, and facility inspections
- On-the-job training spans 24 months at an ammunition facility to gain practical experience before advancing
Advanced and Specialized Training
- Potential to gain specialized skills such as Improvised Explosive Device Disposal, Dangerous Goods Transportation, Disposal of Biological/Chemical Munitions, and Marine Explosive Handling
