Role Overview

We seek a motivated and eager individual to join our Specimen Services team as a Trainee/Medical Laboratory Technician. This permanent, part-time role involves working 60 hours every two weeks, with shifts of 6 hours in the late afternoon to evening (1:30 pm to 8 pm) during weekdays. The department operates from 4:00 am to midnight daily to provide around-the-clock laboratory services. While routine rostered shifts are standard, occasional evening and weekend duties are expected, ideal for those who appreciate varied schedules and contributing to critical healthcare services.

Key Duties

• Barcode, receipt, and prepare specimens for laboratory processing.
• Enter patient and test data accurately into the system.
• Respond to telephone inquiries professionally.
• Collaborate effectively within the team, maintain focus under pressure, and apply strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills.

Candidate Profile

• Ability to work systematically while strictly following quality and procedural protocols.
• Strong customer service orientation towards internal and external clients with excellent interpersonal communication.
• Basic understanding of medical terminology and lab operations, including safety practices and equipment handling, is preferred but not mandatory.
• Possession of a Diploma in Applied Science or Bachelor of Science is advantageous, but not a requirement.
• Registration as a Medical Laboratory Pre-Analytical Technician with the Medical Science Council of New Zealand and holding an Annual Practicing Certificate is desirable but not essential.
• Must be authorized to work in New Zealand.

Applicants without current registration will receive support to obtain certification within two years of employment. Candidates pursuing qualification registration will also be considered.
