Role Overview

We are seeking a Technical Writer to take full responsibility for the documentation of Nabu Casa’s Hardware and Cloud products. This high-impact role involves creating accessible documents for a global user and developer audience, including beginner setup guides and detailed API and integration documents. Collaboration with engineers will be essential to transform complex technical information into clear content that enables users to operate independently without needing support assistance. The candidate should excel in accuracy and clarity, gaining the trust of both engineers and our technical community.

Key Duties

• Manage the entire documentation lifecycle for Nabu Casa Hardware and Cloud, ensuring content accuracy, currency, and easy discoverability.
• Coordinate and produce documentation for new features, integrations, and product releases in line with shipping schedules.
• Partner directly with engineers to research technical content, minimizing their documentation workload.
• Regularly audit and enhance existing documentation to identify outdated sections, fill gaps, and improve organization and tone.
• Establish and uphold documentation standards, including style guides and templates, to maintain consistency and support community contributions.
• Address and prioritize documentation feedback from users, support teams, and internal stakeholders to improve user experience.
• Contribute to developer-oriented materials such as API guides, integration docs, and contributor instructions to aid the Open Home Foundation community and partners.
• Monitor documentation quality through metrics like support ticket themes and community input, providing regular reports.

Required Qualifications and Skills

• Proven expertise in technical writing with a portfolio focused on developer or product documentation.
• Proficiency in reading and understanding code such as Python, YAML, and REST APIs, enabling the creation of accurate documentation with minimal engineer supervision.
• Solid knowledge of smart home hardware and electronics with the ability to independently troubleshoot basic issues.
• Experience with docs-as-code tools: Git, Markdown, static site generators like MkDocs or Docusaurus.
• Highly autonomous and proactive in identifying documentation needs without direct instructions.
• Strong ability to engage and extract technical details efficiently from busy engineering staff.

Preferred Experience

• Familiarity with Home Assistant or comparable open-source or self-hosted software.
• Experience managing documentation for community-driven projects with external contributors.
• Methodical approach to auditing extensive documentation and prioritizing improvements.
• Comfort working asynchronously in a fully remote, distributed team environment.

What We Provide

Nabu Casa is a fully remote employer with salaried positions worldwide structured around local employment laws. This is a full-time role (40 hours per week) with flexible hours, aiming for roughly a 3-hour daily overlap for team collaboration. The role reports to the VP Commercial. Compensation is targeted at the 75th percentile of local market rates and calibrated by role, experience, and hours worked. Approximate annual salary ranges for primary countries include:

• Hungary: 16100000 - 20250000 HUF
• Ireland: 52800 - 70500 EUR
• Italy: 54000 - 64400 EUR
• Poland: 150000 - 215000 PLN
• Portugal: 47900 - 61200 EUR
• Romania: 215000 - 275000 RON
• Spain: 50500 - 63600 EUR
• United Kingdom: 57100 - 73800 GBP
