About the Role
Join the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) as a Senior Regulatory Specialist, focusing on enhancing New Zealand's building regulatory system. This role involves monitoring, reviewing, and driving improvements within Territorial Authorities (TAs) and Building Consent Authorities (BCAs) to ensure compliance and elevate overall system performance.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and participate in technical performance assessments of TAs and BCAs nationwide.
- Analyze and report on the effectiveness of the building regulatory system.
- Provide expert consultation on matters related to building control.
- Develop actionable insights and recommend improvements to regulatory outcomes.
- Collaborate directly with councils, offering education, guidance, and support to foster compliance.
- Mentor and guide team members to enhance organizational capabilities.
- Work closely with various governmental and sector stakeholders to promote collaborative improvements.
- Contribute actively to MBIE's wider regulatory stewardship initiatives.
Required Skills and Experience
- Strong understanding of the Building Act and associated regulatory frameworks.
- Experience operating within regulatory environments and managing complex processes.
- Proven ability to navigate stakeholder relationships and manage complexity.
- Excellent analytical and decision-making skills.
- Experience in project management including conducting reviews.
- Outstanding written communication and report preparation capabilities.
- Ability to coach and support colleagues effectively.
- Comfortable working independently within a dispersed or virtual team setting.
- Proactive attitude with strengths in risk identification and problem-solving.
- Legal entitlement to live and work in New Zealand is essential.

- This is a fixed-term or secondment opportunity for two years, based in Wellington or Christchurch.
- The salary band ranges from $110,098 to $138,028, supplemented with KiwiSaver and wellness benefits.
