Role Overview
The Senior Government Mortgage Underwriter position is a remote, full-time role focused on evaluating government-backed mortgage loans such as FHA, VA, USDA, and similar programs. This role involves reviewing loan applications, credit reports, income and asset documentation, and collateral to assess borrower creditworthiness and compliance with relevant regulations. The underwriter makes timely decisions including conditional approvals, suspensions, or denials and communicates requirements clearly to loan officers and processors.
Key Responsibilities
Daily duties include analyzing complex borrower profiles, conducting risk assessments, validating supporting documentation, and ensuring adherence to quality control and audit standards. Additional responsibilities include improving underwriting policies, mentoring junior underwriters, and collaborating with management to handle complex or escalated cases.
Qualifications and Skills
- In-depth knowledge of government-backed mortgage programs (FHA, VA, USDA) and related agency guidelines.
- Strong communication skills to effectively articulate underwriting decisions and conditions to stakeholders.
- Advanced analytical capabilities for evaluating credit, income, assets, collateral, and overall risk.
- Experience with local government regulations and public sector housing finance requirements.
- Several years of recent senior-level experience in government mortgage underwriting.
- Proficiency with loan origination systems and automated underwriting platforms.
- Understanding of compliance, quality control processes, and federal and state lending regulations, including fair lending practices.
- Ability to independently manage a high-volume pipeline remotely while meeting tight deadlines.
- Valid professional certifications or designations relevant to mortgage underwriting.
- Associate or bachelor's degree in finance, business, or a related discipline, or equivalent professional experience.
