Role Overview
The Senior Analyst for Merchant Advance US Underwriting evaluates unsecured merchant advance applications by analyzing merchant processing data, repayment capacity, and risk indicators. The analyst independently makes underwriting decisions within defined policies and approval limits while contributing to process improvements that enhance the underwriting framework's scalability and consistency.
Core Responsibilities
- Examine merchant advance applications for eligibility using merchant processing information.
- Analyze processing history, volume patterns, refund and chargeback activities, and settlement behaviors to evaluate risk.
- Assess the repayment ability and overall exposure risk tied to unsecured merchant advances.
- Make autonomous underwriting decisions following established policies and approval guidelines.
- Document the reasoning behind underwriting outcomes clearly, highlighting key risks and supporting evidence.
- Detect and escalate discrepancies, missing data, unusual processing trends, or red flags.
- Maintain comprehensive case documentation and audit records for all underwriting assessments.
- Identify and suggest improvements to underwriting procedures, data sources, decision logic, and operational controls.
- Assist in updating standard operating procedures, checklists, and review templates to reflect process updates and policy modifications.
- Collaborate with management and key stakeholders to address recurrent issues and enhance the underwriting process.
Candidate Profile and Requirements
- Must hold an MBA or postgraduate degree in Business, Finance, Commerce, Economics, or a closely related discipline.
- Possess 4 to 6 years of experience in credit risk, loan underwriting, or financing, especially with unsecured business loans, merchant advances, small business lending, or similar credit risk functions.
- Demonstrated ability to analyze financial statements, including bank statements, to evaluate credit risk.
- Strong skills in reviewing merchant processing data and converting this data into well-grounded underwriting judgments.
- Understanding of risk factors including transaction trends, refunds, chargebacks, account deficits, and atypical merchant behaviors.
- Proficient in English with excellent written and verbal communication skills for precise documentation and professional communication regarding underwriting decisions and escalations.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience in unsecured business loan underwriting, merchant advance programs, merchant acquiring, or small business credit evaluation.
- Familiarity with US merchant processing ecosystems, underwriting queues, decision workflows, or risk management tools.
- Ability to operate effectively within a production environment while maintaining strict quality and documentation standards.
- Skill in recognizing recurring procedural discrepancies and proposing straightforward and practical improvements.
