Role overview
The Boring Company is building underground tunnel systems to reduce traffic, lower tunneling costs, and advance the practicality of Hyperloop-style transportation across dense urban areas. The company is hiring a Remote Operator to manage tunneling equipment from a distance, including direct control of the Tunnel Boring Machine and related systems.
This position is a strong fit for candidates with an aviation, maritime, military, or similarly disciplined operating background who are comfortable working under strict procedures, keeping communication clear, and maintaining consistency in remote operations. The role demands a strong sense of urgency, a solid operating background, and the ability to work extended hours. Most work will be done from the Global Operations Control Center (GOCC), with occasional travel to commercial and development project sites, including limited time in the tunnel.
Responsibilities
- Operate tunneling and mining equipment remotely from the Global Operations Control Center.
- Track, capture, and document process issues that reduce speed, reliability, or cost efficiency.
- Create and maintain standardized operating materials such as work instructions, procedures, and bills of materials.
- Follow safety requirements and regulatory standards to support a secure worksite.
- Help design and roll out training programs for field and operations staff.
- Keep current on tunneling technology developments and share practical improvements with the broader team.
Role requirements
- Prior experience in remote-controlled field operations, ideally in military, aviation, mining, or infrastructure environments such as piloting or control-room work.
- Working knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and robotic systems, with hands-on technical exposure.
- Strong analytical thinking and structured problem-solving ability.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, along with the ability to collaborate across varied teams and stakeholders.
- Comfort working in a fast-moving, changing environment.
- Readiness to work long shifts and spend up to 10% of working time in the tunnel while traveling to active project locations as needed.
- Understanding of safety rules and procedures used in construction or comparable industries.
