Role Overview
National Railroad Safety Services, Inc. (NRSS) invites applications for the full-time role of Railroad Flagger based in Athens, GA. This position plays a critical role in protecting workers on the rail tracks by controlling train movements while complying with federal safety regulations. The job supports a wide range of rail operations including major railroads, smaller rail lines, transit agencies, DOT rail divisions, suppliers, and contractors.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage and coordinate job site activities efficiently.
- Maintain clear communication with dispatchers, train crews, railroad personnel, and contractors.
- Conduct safety briefings prior to commencement of work.
- Adhere to and enforce all applicable railroad, state, and federal safety guidelines.
- Verify that contractors fulfill their training requirements.
- Identify and rectify any safety rule violations promptly.
- Document daily work activities thoroughly through reports.
- Ensure on-track safety according to federal standards.
Requirements and Qualifications
- At least two years' experience in railroad operations, preferably with Class 1 Railroads, Regional or Short Line Railroads, Transit systems, State DOT Rail Divisions, Railroad suppliers, contractors, or consultants, ideally within the Maintenance of Way (MOW) department.
- Proficiency with basic computer tools such as Citrix, email, smartphones, and Android tablets.
- Exceptional organizational skills and detail-oriented work approach.
- Effective verbal and written communication abilities in English.
- Familiarity with railroad engineering, design, construction, and safety standards.
- Ability to foster and maintain strong client relations.
- Preparedness to travel extensively—ranging from 50% to 85% travel including extended assignments lasting months.
- Willingness and ability to complete mandatory federal, client, and company-required training programs.
- Physical capabilities to stand for prolonged periods, walk on uneven terrain, lift up to 50 pounds, and operate in challenging weather including extreme heat, cold, noisy, dusty conditions.
- Good vision including near, far, color, and peripheral.
- High school diploma or equivalent education is required.
Work Environment
- This position is primarily field-based, requiring on-site presence.
- Candidates must communicate fluently in English, both spoken and written.
- Travel and long-distance driving are expected components of the job.
