Principal Transport Planner

Role overview

This is a permanent, full-time opportunity based in Palmerston North, Manawatū-Whanganui, New Zealand. Candidates from anywhere in New Zealand are welcome to apply, although preference will be given to applicants based in Wellington or the Lower North Island, or to those with strong knowledge of those areas.

The opportunity

You will take on a wide portfolio of work across transport planning projects and the wider planning practice. In this senior role, you will help shape transport outcomes and contribute to initiatives that improve the transport system.

Key responsibilities

As a senior team member, you will lead and support integrated transport planning work, take ownership of transport outcomes for assigned projects, and act as a trusted client representative by guiding both internal and external contributors to meet delivery expectations. You will also help strengthen practice capability and support the growth of emerging talent.

The ideal person is proactive, self-driven, and comfortable working with a wide range of stakeholders. You will need to collaborate well, think in a solution-oriented way, communicate ideas clearly and persuasively, and bring a mindset focused on learning and improvement.

What we are looking for

You should bring substantial experience as a transport planner, including practical understanding of project development and investment case principles. The role also calls for strong project leadership, a sharp eye for detail, and a delivery-focused approach.

Experience working with professional services suppliers and reviewing their outputs alongside subject matter experts is important. You should also be able to connect people effectively, work through legislative processes and political influences, and keep customer outcomes front of mind. A collaborative leadership style, mentoring ability, and commitment to building a strong team culture are also valued.

Holding CTPP chartership, or actively working toward it, is preferred.

The Transport Planning team plays a central role in shaping New Zealand’s future transport network. Its work spans strategic planning, investment cases, network optimisation, and major infrastructure programmes, all aimed at delivering meaningful benefits for communities, people, and the wider economy. This is an opportunity to contribute to better transport outcomes for Aotearoa.

Pay and benefits

The base salary for this position ranges from $142,000 to $156,000, depending on relevant knowledge and experience. Permanent employees also receive 5 weeks of annual leave, plus Life Insurance, Income Protection Insurance, and Critical Illness Insurance.
