Position Overview
The OSP Field Technician II role involves independent support for installing, maintaining, inspecting, and documenting outside plant telecommunications infrastructure. Coordination with internal teams, utility providers, contractors, and permitting bodies is essential to complete projects in line with engineering standards, customer needs, and regulations.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct field surveys to validate utilities, right-of-way status, and project prerequisites.
- Document field conditions through notes, sketches, maps, and photographs.
- Assist in preparing OSP design drawings, construction plans, and work packages under senior oversight.
- Perform installation and upkeep of OSP infrastructure.
- Execute field testing and basic troubleshooting for connectivity and performance concerns.
- Apply industry standards, permitting criteria, and safety protocols.
- Collaborate with construction teams, permitting agencies, and utilities to aid project progress.
- Monitor project developments, field modifications, and escalate issues when needed.
- Maintain accurate project documentation, including maps, as-builts, permits, and field alterations.
- Support compliance with company policies and industry regulations.
- Provide technical support and assist in training fellow OSP field members.
- Operate company vehicles and equipment responsibly and safely.
- Adhere to OSHA guidelines and promote a safety-first culture.
Candidate Profile
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Experience of 1 to 3 years in OSP operations, telecom, or similar fields.
- Familiarity with fiber optic installation, testing, or splicing.
- Capacity to work with minimal supervision independently.
- Strong communication, organization, and teamwork skills.
- Valid driver’s license mandatory.
- Ability to interpret technical maps, drawings, and documents.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office; experience with AutoCAD, GIS, or design software is an advantage.
- Flexibility to adapt to changing project priorities and field conditions.
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate degree or technical certification in telecommunications, engineering, or related subjects.
- Experience with permit management, utility coordination, and OSP documentation.
- OSHA or relevant safety certifications.
- Familiarity with AutoCAD, GIS, or similar design tools.
- Knowledge of fiber and copper OSP networks.
Physical and Work Environment Requirements
- Ability to walk and stand outdoors for extended times.
- Capability to lift up to 75 pounds.
- Frequent bending, climbing, and work in diverse outdoor conditions.
- Comfortable working at heights of 25 to 30 feet, including ladder and bucket truck use.
- Exposure to weather elements such as heat, cold, rain, and wind.
- Required use of PPE including hard hats, gloves, safety glasses, and high-visibility attire.
- Regular travel to job sites, sometimes with overnight stays.
- May require on-call availability as needed.
