Position Overview

We are recruiting multiple Medical Laboratory Technicians for the Histology Department located at Wellington Hospital. Candidates will be responsible for executing a variety of laboratory tasks with precision and efficiency while expanding their technical knowledge and professional abilities. The role requires individuals comfortable operating both independently and collaboratively within a team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Properly receive, process, and store specimens, ensuring urgent samples receive priority.
  • Effectively organize and prioritize tasks to meet deadlines and turnaround expectations.
  • Conduct tests following established protocols and methodologies.
  • Comprehend and apply the fundamental principles and techniques used in department procedures.
  • Prepare and operate laboratory equipment per departmental manuals.
  • Perform necessary equipment inspections, calibrations, maintenance, and quality control checks, recognizing issues and notifying relevant personnel.
  • Use the Laboratory Information System proficiently to generate worklists and enter data correctly.

Candidate Profile

  • Possess strong adherence to detailed quality procedures with a methodical work approach.
  • Demonstrate initiative, teamwork skills, and excellent communication suitable for fast-paced environments.
  • Show adaptability and eagerness to learn and improve laboratory processes continually.
  • Maintain meticulous attention to detail and accurate record-keeping practices.
  • Be capable of independently managing responsibilities, particularly during night shifts within a supportive framework.
  • Hold registration and a current Annual Practicing Certificate from the Medical Sciences Council of New Zealand, or be in the process of obtaining them.
  • Be eligible to work legally in New Zealand.

Work Schedule

Positions include varied shifts such as day shifts beginning at 7am or 9am, late shifts from 2pm to 11pm with a one-hour lunch break, overnight shifts from 10:30pm Sunday to 7:00am Friday or 10:45pm to 7:15am Friday, and part-time evening shifts. Applicants are encouraged to specify their availability in their cover letter.
