Janitor

Role overview

BAM UK & Ireland is looking for a Janitor to join its FM team supporting Bromsgrove Schools. This role is based on site and is offered as a 12-month fixed-term contract. The position is for 37.5 hours each week, with working times to be confirmed.

Pay and package

The hourly rate for this role is £13.05. BAM also offers an enhanced family-friendly package that includes support for men’s and women’s health, fertility, maternity, paternity and shared parental leave, fostering leave, menopause support, carer leave, and surrogacy and adoption support.

Key duties

• Carry out scheduled cleaning tasks.
• Provide cover for staff absences such as sickness and annual leave across caretaking teams.
• Support the Senior Janitor with specialist and deep cleaning during school closures or other assigned periods.
• Oversee contractors when needed.
• Help the main kitchens at lunch time by returning trays and crockery and using the dishwasher to assist service.
• Make sure basic daily upkeep of cleaning equipment is completed.
• Assist the Senior Janitor with waste management activities.
• Work closely with the Senior Janitor each day and attend meetings when required.
• Support delivery of the annual lifecycle programme.
• Carry out induction for new cleaning staff.
• Respond to emergency cleaning needs.
• Provide emergency cover operating tills in the main kitchens.

Team environment

You will be part of a school-based team alongside cleaners, the Senior Janitor and the wider facilities group.

Candidate profile

The employer is seeking someone with prior experience in a school or a similar setting, along with the ability to work well with customers, colleagues and children. Strong team-leading capability is also important.

Skills, knowledge and qualifications

Ideal applicants should have a BICS qualification or equivalent relevant experience. Good maths and English skills at GCSE level or equivalent are needed, along with confidence using Microsoft Office. A working understanding of health, safety and welfare rules, COSHH requirements and manual handling is also required.
