Job description

About eBay

eBay is a global leader in ecommerce, transforming how millions of buyers and sellers in over 190 markets connect and trade. The company fosters an inclusive, innovative culture focused on authentic customer experiences and sustainability, working together to shape the future of commerce.

Team and Role Overview

The team develops robust systems to protect eBay users from cybercrime and abuse by converting cybercrime research into actionable, production-grade solutions. Their work includes both off-platform cybercrime detection and on-platform prevention, emphasizing rapid transition from insights to effective actions.

We are seeking a Full Stack Cybercrime Engineer responsible for designing and delivering software that detects, investigates, and disrupts cybercrime targeting eBay's platform and customers. This is a technically driven role requiring expertise in building scalable systems with Python, Java, and SQL and deploying them securely in cloud environments. Equally important is a cybersecurity research mindset enabling the engineer to anticipate attacker tactics and develop improved protective mechanisms.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and deploy production-quality systems using Python, Java, and SQL to detect and manage cybercrime and abuse incidents.
  • Create AI-powered workflows, agentic systems, and automation tools to facilitate cybercrime research, enrichment, and user protection.
  • Build scalable backend services, APIs, data pipelines, and internal tools that translate cybercrime intelligence into protective measures for customers.
  • Analyze phishing, brand misuse, identity fraud, and other cybercrime patterns and convert findings into resilient engineering solutions.
  • Enhance detection signals, decisioning algorithms, and response processes to reduce abuse rates and accelerate mitigation.
  • Utilize cloud infrastructure and distributed systems to build secure, reliable, and scalable platforms.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with security, product, and engineering teams to deliver seamless cybercrime protection from early identification through deployment.
  • Assume full ownership of systems including design, testing, deployment, monitoring, and iterative improvement.
  • Maintain high standards of quality and operational discipline, including prompt resolution of production incidents.

Expected Achievements

  • Implement systems that minimize time from cybercrime detection to protective deployment.
  • Deliver engineering solutions enhancing prevention, identification, disruption, and remediation capabilities at scale.
  • Apply an investigative security perspective to reveal attacker modes and embed those insights into operational tools.
  • Develop AI-native, agentic features that reduce manual workloads while improving response speed and coverage.
  • Ensure reliability, security, and quality through dedicated operational stewardship.

Required Skills and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience in Computer Science, Engineering, Security, or a related discipline.
  • Proven software engineering background building and maintaining production systems.
  • Strong programming abilities in Python and Java alongside fluency in SQL.
  • Experience working with cloud platforms and modern distributed architectures.
  • Development of APIs, backend services, data pipelines, and automation implementations in live environments.
  • Competence in debugging, monitoring, and optimizing operational systems.
  • Skill in transforming vague problems into concrete technical implementations.
  • Background in security engineering, cybercrime analysis, intelligence, trust and safety, fraud, or adversarial research.
  • A hacker-like security research mindset characterized by curiosity, deep technical understanding, and an ability to discern attacker strategies and vulnerabilities.
  • Expertise investigating phishing, impersonation, credential theft, brand exploitation, and digital identity attacks.
  • Experience designing and deploying agentic systems, AI workflows, tooling leveraging large language models, and autonomous or semi-autonomous cybercrime response mechanisms.
  • Demonstrated ability to build detection frameworks, intelligence enrichment pipelines, and automated investigative processes.
  • Comfort operating in fast-paced environments where engineers take ownership from concept through production delivery.
