About the Role
The Northern Territory Department of Corrections offers opportunities for full-time ongoing and fixed period positions in locations such as Darwin, Alice Springs, Tennant Creek, and Katherine. The role offers a competitive remuneration package ranging from $108,308 to $118,829 inclusive of superannuation and allowances, with base pay between $69,074 and $75,784. Benefits include market-leading salary, overtime possibilities, and up to seven weeks of recreation leave annually, organized over 13 shifts in 28 days to promote work-life balance. The induction involves an intensive two-week fast-track training program.
Purpose and Responsibilities
As an Experienced Correctional Officer, you will play a critical role in positively influencing prisoners’ rehabilitation, education, and training. You will be part of a professional team charged with the secure, safe, and humane supervision and management of prisoners, aiming to foster better reintegration outcomes into the community.
Key responsibilities include:
- Supervising, monitoring, and managing prisoner activities
- Implementing security protocols to ensure prisoner safety
- Escorting prisoners and responding promptly to emergencies
- For those with Trade Certificates, overseeing and training prisoners in Correctional Services Industries to enhance their work skills across various manufacturing and service sectors
Candidate Requirements
- Australian or New Zealand citizenship, or Australian permanent residency
- Minimum of two years' recent experience as a Correctional Officer within the last two years
- Holding a Certificate III in Correctional Practice or an equivalent qualification
- Strong communication and organizational abilities
- Demonstrated competence in working within a cross-cultural environment
Compensation and Benefits
- Competitive remuneration packages including base salary and 40% consolidated allowance plus 12% superannuation
- Up to six weeks of recreational leave plus three weeks of personal leave, with an additional week granted for working 10 or more Sundays annually

- For Alice Springs, an attraction and retention allowance offered incrementally (totaling up to $10,000 over time) to encourage staff retention
