About the Role
Auckland Council is seeking an Environmental Monitoring Officer to join their team dedicated to monitoring, ensuring compliance, and enforcing resource consent conditions. This full-time position supports the achievement of positive environmental outcomes across Auckland by overseeing resource consent adherence, addressing breaches, and encouraging remediation efforts. The role involves both fieldwork and office-based tasks, as well as collaboration on strategic projects to enhance environmental performance.
Responsibilities
- Monitor active resource consents to verify adherence to established processes and compliance standards.
- Provide constructive feedback aimed at improving monitoring services continuously.
- Engage in initiatives that mitigate environmental risks and promote operational improvements.
- Develop and implement enforcement strategies to handle instances of non-compliance.
- Facilitate mediation and advise consent holders towards achieving regulatory compliance.
- Support team cohesion by mentoring colleagues and fostering a collaborative workplace culture.
- Work alongside various teams to accomplish strategic environmental objectives.
Candidate Profile
Applicants should possess at least two years of experience in environmental planning, compliance, or regulatory roles, preferably within local government. A relevant tertiary qualification in fields such as Risk or Compliance Management, Environmental Science, or Law is essential. Candidates must demonstrate strong expertise in regulatory compliance, be familiar with the Resource Management Act 1991 and Local Government Act 2002, and be eligible to hold warrants under both acts. Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills are critical for this position.
Job Requirements
- Relevant tertiary qualification in Risk/Compliance Management, Environmental Science, Law, or similar disciplines.
- Minimum two years of practical experience in environmental compliance or planning.
- Experience working within local government contexts, especially in regulatory environments, is preferred.
- Possession of a current and valid New Zealand driver's license.
- Eligibility for warrants under the Resource Management Act 1991 and Local Government Act 2002 is mandatory.
Additional Information
Working hours are 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday. The role includes a competitive salary ranging from $78,311 to $92,130 annually, with the employer KiwiSaver contribution provided on top. Auckland Council supports flexible working options where feasible. This role is safety-sensitive and requires a pre-employment drug and alcohol screening. A full and clean driver's license is essential, and successful candidates will be warranted by Auckland Council, permitting entry to properties in relation to breaches or offences.
