Job Overview

The State of Tennessee's Department of Safety and Homeland Security in Alcoa, TN, is seeking a full-time Driver's License Examiner. This role involves assessing applicants' qualifications for driver's licenses and related services by administering vision, written, and road tests, processing applications and fees, and ensuring adherence to state laws and regulations. The position requires a valid driver's license and passage of a criminal background check.

Responsibilities

  • Explain Tennessee driver's license laws, policies, and procedures to the public, answering inquiries about office services, fees, and processes.
  • Collect fees and verify identification documents such as social security cards, proof of residence, and medical certifications; approve applicants for testing accordingly.
  • Manage cash registers, track daily office revenues, reconcile discrepancies between cash and reports, prepare bank deposits, and submit them to banking institutions.
  • Guide applicants through form completion and testing procedures; administer vision, written, and road skill assessments, photograph applicants digitally, and document test outcomes.
  • Inspect applicants' vehicles for safe operation by checking vehicle functions like lights, brakes, and signals; evaluate driving skills against traffic laws and safety standards.
  • Update licensing information and biographical data in the License Information System for Tennessee (LIST), verifying data accuracy with applicants.
  • Handle complex cases including customer inquiries, immigration-related applications, special accommodations, audits, reporting, and supply requests.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent education.
  • Successful clearance of a criminal background check and fingerprint verification.
  • No convictions or insanity acquittals for permanent disqualifying offenses under Title 49 CFR Section 1572.103(a).
  • No convictions for interim disqualifying offenses within seven years prior to application and no incarceration for such offenses within five years.
  • Not subject to any felony warrants or active holds related to disqualifying offenses.
  • Possess or obtain a valid motor vehicle operator's license before appointment.
  • Driver history must be free for the past five years of DUI, reckless driving, license suspensions due to moving violations, or excessive moving violations.
