Job description
Role Overview
The Deputy Manager for Fire & Safety will oversee and ensure the effective implementation and maintenance of comprehensive fire protection and safety systems at plant facilities. This role demands stringent monitoring of firefighting infrastructure, proactive fire hazard prevention, and thorough emergency preparedness.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage the operation and upkeep of fire protection installations including fire water networks, hydrants, sprinklers, firefighting pumps, foam-based suppression systems, and fire alarms.
- Conduct routine inspections of firefighting equipment and emergency response resources to maintain readiness.
- Evaluate fire safety aspects during design, construction, and commissioning phases and address compliance requirements.
- Design and enforce programs focusing on fire hazard mitigation.
- Carry out Fire Risk Assessments to detect and evaluate potential hazards.
- Develop, update, and maintain fire emergency response procedures, evacuation strategies, and firefighting protocols.
- Ensure compliance with relevant regulations such as the National Building Code, Factory Act, Explosives and Petroleum Rules.
- Liaise and coordinate with local fire departments and emergency response agencies.
- Oversee safety adherence during complex project tasks including civil, structural, mechanical, and electrical works along with commissioning activities.
- Institute and monitor Permit-to-Work systems for high-risk operations such as hot work, confined space entry, excavation, lifting, and working at heights.
- Perform hazard identification and risk assessments for project-related tasks and ensure contractors meet company safety standards.
- Lead emergency response units during fire or industrial incidents and manage drills, evacuation exercises, and disaster simulations.
- Maintain firefighting team training and ensure all emergency equipment remains functional.
- Conduct investigations into fire incidents and near-misses, perform root cause analysis, and establish corrective measures.
- Monitor and ensure closure of safety audit observations and maintain compliance reporting to statutory bodies.
- Deliver fire safety training programs, inductions, toolbox talks, and awareness initiatives for employees and contractors, covering emergency response and evacuation techniques.
Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering specializing in Mechanical, Electrical, Fire, Chemical, or Industrial Safety fields from an accredited institution.
- Professional experience ranging between 4 to 8 years in fire and safety management within thermal power plants, heavy industry, refineries, petrochemical sectors, manufacturing, or infrastructure projects.
- Valuable exposure to greenfield thermal power plant construction and commissioning.
