Deputy Fire Marshal

Job Overview

This role is a full-time, term position spanning 7 months with 75 hours bi-weekly, with potential for conversion to permanent status. The Yukon Government’s Community Services Department, known for its diversity, includes 18 branches aimed at empowering communities across the territory. As a Deputy Fire Marshal, you will operate under the Fire and Life Safety branch, supporting the Fire Marshal’s Office in protecting lives and property through fire prevention, enforcement, and education.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop, maintain, and standardize training curricula for firefighters and staff.
• Prepare multi-year training plans, resource forecasts, and budget requirements.
• Ensure compliance with legislative, regulatory, and certification-related training standards.
• Coordinate delivery of training courses, instructor resources, and scheduling throughout Yukon.
• Manage training records and certification tracking systems.
• Support public fire safety education and outreach initiatives.
• Assist with fire inspections, investigations, and enforcement activities as needed.

Essential Qualifications

• Experience conducting inspections ensuring legal, code, and standards compliance.
• Experience leading post-incident fire investigations and drafting findings reports.
• Expertise interpreting and enforcing fire-related legislation, codes, and standards.
• Certification equivalent to NFPA 1001 or Yukon Firefighter 1.
• Experience in developing and implementing procedures and guidelines.
• Fire service instructional roles such as Instructor, Training Officer, or Chief Training Officer, with NFPA 1521 and NFPA 1041 certifications are strong assets.
• NFPA 1033 Fire Investigator and/or NFPA 1031 Fire Inspector Level 1 certifications are advantageous.

Working Conditions and Requirements

• Must pass a criminal record check including vulnerable sector screening.
• Hold a valid Class 3 driver’s license and provide medical clearance.
• Expected to work irregular hours, including weekends, and participate in on-call rotations.
• Approximately 25% travel required, including road and occasional air travel, often in challenging winter conditions.
• Work primarily in office settings but with exposure to hazardous environments during inspections, training, and investigations.
• Use of personal protective equipment such as turnout gear and respiratory devices is required.
• Work may involve exposure to loud noise, extreme weather, and damaged structures.
