Role Overview
The Security Solutions Data Science division develops AI and ML models integral to Mastercard’s identity verification and risk management efforts during authentication and authorization processes. The team not only builds these production-level models but also creates scalable full-cycle data science infrastructure spanning data sourcing, feature engineering, validation, deployment, and monitoring. These solutions are designed to be robust, repeatable, and scalable to sustain product growth and meet evolving requirements.
Within Mastercard Services, the identity data science portfolio focuses on advancing smart risk management capabilities over the merchant lifecycle, including fraud prevention and cybersecurity enhancements. As a Data Scientist II, you will tackle merchant risk challenges during onboarding and continuous monitoring by helping to develop a merchant registry and profiling system. Your contributions will aid in building core data assets, profiling methodologies, analytics workflows, and machine learning models that reveal merchant behavior, relationships, and risk indicators over time.
Key Responsibilities
- Investigate extensive datasets encompassing transactions, merchants, and associated entities to discover patterns, anomalies, and evolving trends.
- Assist in research and creation of merchant registry and profiling tools to bolster risk assessment at onboarding and during ongoing monitoring.
- Engage in feature engineering, entity matching, and analysis workflows to enhance merchant-level insights.
- Develop prototype machine learning and analytic solutions under guidance from senior experts.
- Construct and maintain scalable data processing and model pipelines within Databricks and Spark ecosystems.
- Select suitable analytical strategies for diverse problems, validating them via structured testing and benchmarking.
- Support continuous model oversight, benchmarking, and iteration for quality assurance and enhancement.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with Data Science, Product, and Engineering teams using Agile practices to enable iterative development and continuous delivery.
Required Qualifications and Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in Data Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Engineering, Economics, Physics, or related quantitative field.
- Hands-on experience applying data science and machine learning techniques to solve business challenges.
- Solid grounding in statistics, analytics, and foundational machine learning concepts.
- Proficiency in Python programming and SQL query language; experience with Pandas for data manipulation.
- Familiarity with large-scale data processing and an interest in scalable solutions; exposure to Spark is advantageous.
- Competence in writing clean, modular, well-maintained, and documented code following best data science practices; ability to collaborate through peer reviews and shared workflows.
- Skill in selecting appropriate analytical methods and rigorously validating results.
- Strong critical thinking and commitment to delivering high-quality, robust solutions.
- Understanding of Agile development methodologies and contribution to iterative delivery cycles.
- Willingness to stay updated on emerging technologies and industry developments.
- Effective communication skills for teamwork and stakeholder engagement.

Compensation
The role will have competitive compensation based on location, experience, and qualifications, with eligibility for an annual discretionary bonus. For Toronto, Canada, the annual salary range is approximately 91000 to 140000 CAD.
