Role overview
Microsoft’s Cloud Operations & Innovation (CO+I) team is looking for a Critical Environment Technician to help keep datacenter infrastructure running reliably. This position is fully onsite at one of Microsoft’s Auckland data centers and involves working directly with critical systems, coordinating with vendors and facility specialists, identifying unsafe conditions, carrying out maintenance, responding to incidents, and monitoring equipment through telemetry and other tools.
In CO+I, you will contribute to the infrastructure that supports Microsoft’s cloud and online products, including Bing, Office 365, Xbox, OneDrive, and Microsoft Azure. The organization also emphasizes employee development through rotation programs, diversity and inclusion initiatives, and professional certification opportunities. Microsoft operates a global datacenter footprint spanning more than 200 datacenters across 32 countries, supporting over 1 billion customers and 20 million businesses in more than 90 countries.
The company highlights a strong focus on sustainability, operational efficiency, growth mindset, collaboration, inclusion, respect, integrity, and accountability.
Key responsibilities
- Act as a specialist in one main CE discipline, such as electrical, mechanical, controls, or generators, and handle more advanced work independently.
- Regularly inspect critical facility equipment, including HVAC, controls, mechanical systems, the building, and surrounding grounds, and escalate unsafe or unusual conditions according to standards and policy.
- Use the internal CMMS platform to maintain asset records and complete maintenance work orders.
- Respond quickly to onsite incidents, lead response efforts for abnormal conditions affecting operations, and coordinate corrective work with other critical facilities professionals without supervision.
- Improve, create, or apply emergency operating procedures, methods of procedure, and standard operating procedures for CE activities and incident handling.
- Carry out planned, predictive, and corrective maintenance and repairs on relevant equipment while following approved procedures.
- Apply practical knowledge of equipment operation to troubleshoot systems, subsystems, and components within the trained discipline.
- Support junior colleagues by advising them on troubleshooting and problem-solving.
- Follow safety, security, environmental health, and work-hazard processes to complete work safely, accurately, and reliably.
Candidate requirements
- High school diploma, GED, or equivalent, plus at least 1 year of mission-critical services or related applied work experience in environments such as data centers, oil and gas refineries, hospitals, pharmaceutical settings, manufacturing, or similar fields.
- Equivalent industry experience may also be considered.
- Ability to work shifts outside standard business hours, including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Must be able to satisfy Microsoft, customer, and/or government security screening requirements.
- Must be willing to complete the Microsoft Cloud background check on hire or transfer and every two years after that.
Preferred background
- High school diploma, GED, or equivalent with 3+ years of mission-critical services experience in a high-availability or critical infrastructure environment.
- Associate degree, technical trade certification, military training, trade school qualification, or higher equivalent education, combined with 3+ years of mission-critical services industry experience.
- Equivalent practical industry experience may also be accepted.
