Overview
The Corporation of the County of Lambton, located in Southwestern Ontario near Lake Huron and the St. Clair River, is inviting applications for a permanent part-time Branch Assistant in its Cultural Services division. This role operates across Region 3 Libraries including the branches in Petrolia, Florence, Alvinson, Shetland, Oil Springs, and Inwood. The position involves providing excellent frontline customer service and supporting library operations with various circulation and administrative duties. The County serves a population of approximately 128,000 residents and values sustainability, economic development, and community partnership.
Work Details
- Employment status: Permanent part-time
- Weekly hours: 20
- Hourly wage range: $23.37 to $27.89
- Location: Onsite at multiple library branches in Region 3
Key Responsibilities
- Assist library patrons in accessing materials including books, videos, and audiobooks following library policies
- Issue and replace library cards and provide orientation and facility tours to new users
- Manage hold requests and notify patrons accordingly
- Collect applicable fees and handle circulation tasks such as check-in/out and shelving
- Offer readers' advisory and respond to reference and research inquiries
- Support library programming including organizing details, registrations, and promoting lifelong learning initiatives
- Perform administrative tasks like photocopying, mail sorting, petty cash balancing, and managing statistics
- Order necessary supplies and maintain corporate files in line with retention policies
- Represent the library positively within the community and collaborate courteously with colleagues and partners
- Provide guidance on the use of new technologies and electronic platforms to patrons
- Ensure proficiency with the Integrated Library System and electronic resources to enhance user experience
Requirements
- Completion of a two-year college diploma or a comparable blend of education and experience
- At least six months experience in a service-related role or library volunteer work
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Outlook, internet research, databases, and digital tools
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and customer service capabilities
- Familiarity with Integrated Library Systems and prior library experience is advantageous
- Submission of a satisfactory Police Vulnerable Sector Check or Police Information Check
Additional Information
Candidates must keep current with relevant legislation, collective agreements, and County policies, and must meet physical demands as outlined. Although there is no direct supervision required, the Branch Assistant will provide guidance to library pages, summer students, and volunteers.
