About the Organization
The County of Lambton is located in Southwestern Ontario, bordering Lake Huron and the St. Clair River, adjacent to Michigan. It is home to around 128,000 residents and is a major employer in the area with about 1,300 staff members. The County offers numerous programs and services across seven divisions, including emergency services, libraries, museums, health, social services, planning, and more, focusing on sustainability, economic growth, and environmental stewardship.
Position Overview
The Branch Assistant will be part of the Lambton County Library system, providing frontline customer support to library visitors. This role encourages a welcoming library atmosphere while managing circulation duties, administrative tasks, reference services, and reader advisory. The assistant supports the delivery of library services aligning with strategic goals set by senior leadership and County Council.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist patrons in accessing materials such as books, videos, audiobooks, and computer use following established policies.
- Issue and replace library cards and provide orientation and tours to new patrons addressing their queries.
- Manage holds and availability notifications for library materials; collect applicable fees.
- Process check-in/out of materials and reshelve returned items; send materials to other branches as needed.
- Offer readers’ advisory and assist patrons with research queries and general inquiries including computer and internet use.
- Plan and deliver library programming such as story hours, reading challenges, and book clubs, including organizing logistics like scheduling and registrations.
- Handle administrative tasks including photocopying, mail distribution, balancing petty cash, recording statistics, ordering supplies, and maintaining files per records retention policies.
- Represent the library positively in the community, interact courteously with patrons, partners, and staff, and help patrons with new technology and electronic platforms.
- Utilize the Integrated Library System effectively and develop familiarity with digital resources to enhance patron services.
- Stay informed and compliant with relevant legislation, collective agreements, and County policies; maintain physical capabilities to perform job duties.
Qualifications
- Two-year college diploma or equivalent education combined with relevant experience.
- At least six months of experience in a customer service role or volunteer library work.
- Proficient with computers, including Microsoft Office, Outlook, internet research, databases, and electronic platforms.
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and customer service skills.
- Experience with library systems, particularly Integrated Library Systems, is advantageous.
- Must pass a satisfactory Police Vulnerable Sector Check or Police Information Check where applicable.
Employment Details
- Permanent part-time position, 20 hours per week.
- Hourly wage ranges from $23.37 to $27.89.
- Work locations include Region 3 Libraries: Petrolia, Florence, Alvinson, Shetland, Oil Springs, and Inwood.
