Software Engineer (Python)

Overview

Scotiabank is hiring a Software Engineer with strong Python and data engineering experience to support the modernization of its client analytics platform in Toronto, Ontario. This role sits within the Client Analytics technology team under Global Banking & Markets Technology, IT&S, and focuses on improving analytics capability, data quality, and data availability to strengthen client insights and profitability analysis.

About the team

The Client Analytics technology group works on a range of modernization initiatives for the bank’s analytics environment. The team collaborates across business and technical functions and gets exposure to multiple systems, business areas, and large-scale data and analytics platforms.

Role summary

The selected candidate will help design, build, and improve technical solutions for complex business needs. The position calls for curiosity, creativity, strong technical depth, and the ability to work effectively with stakeholders such as business partners, business analysts, architects, infrastructure teams, and support teams.

Key responsibilities

• Contribute technical expertise to the design, build, and deployment of robust solutions for difficult business problems.
• Develop new capabilities and ETL workflows, or enhance existing ones, using a broad mix of technologies and end-to-end integration practices.
• Support modernization efforts for the analytics platform while ensuring operational reliability across connected components.
• Build automated testing and regression coverage and apply DevOps-oriented delivery practices to support quality, performance, and stability.
• Maintain and troubleshoot existing applications, resolving business and technical issues as they arise.
• Review code produced by technical consultants and guide their work quality.
• Coordinate infrastructure requirements, including Unix and Windows servers, cloud environments, and databases, while helping with architecture, security, and operational documentation.
• Surface technical risks and constraints early and propose practical, innovative solutions.
• Stay adaptable and effective in a changing environment.

Technical background and requirements

• At least 4 years of Python experience in application development.
• Hands-on experience with cloud-based applications and container technologies such as Docker, Kubernetes, and Rancher.
• At least 5 years of experience with relational databases, including Oracle, PostgreSQL, and SQL Server.
• At least 5 years of strong Linux experience, including command-line work and shell scripting.
• Experience with DevOps and continuous delivery/deployment practices, especially using Bitbucket and Jenkins.
• Exposure to Apache Airflow.
• Working knowledge of Tableau and Power BI implementation is an advantage.
• Solid understanding of object-oriented design, design patterns, microservices architecture, high-performance systems, and multithreading.
• Java and Spring Boot development experience is considered a plus.
• Experience with SAS, Talend, or Spark is also a plus.
