About the Role
NewsWhip, a part of Sprout Social, is seeking an experienced Senior Applied AI/ML Scientist to join its AI, Data and Intelligence team. The role involves working with large-scale news data streams to create predictive insights that empower journalists, PR professionals, and global brands. This position demands innovation in building LLM-powered systems that perform retrieval, reasoning, enrichment, and interaction beyond mere question-answering.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and implement production-ready agentic workflows, including background agents that enrich and monitor incoming data continuously, as well as interactive tools that respond promptly to user queries.
- Develop LLM-enhanced content enrichment features that convert raw news signals into structured, actionable intelligence embedded in customer reports and alerts.
- Lead the design and technical direction of systems empowered by tool-augmented LLMs, using protocols like model context protocol and multi-step reasoning frameworks.
- Make high-level architectural decisions regarding the use of retrieval techniques, agent frameworks, fine-tuning methods, or classic NLP approaches as appropriate.
- Establish standards for structured prompting, schema outputs, and reusable engineering patterns to enable scalable development.
- Set and uphold rigorous quality assurance measures for LLM systems including offline benchmarking, experimentation, regression detection, and human oversight to ensure accuracy and reduce hallucinations.
- Embed observability in features, including tracing, latency controls, cost monitoring, quality metrics, and model drift detection.
- Balance trade-offs among model precision, response times, and operational cost, taking ownership of these decisions.
- Enhance semantic search infrastructure and embedding systems, focusing on strategies like chunking and hybrid search that support agentic architectures.
- Collaborate closely with product and UX teams to translate complex AI concepts into reliable features that serve customers.
- Lead architectural discussions and provide mentorship to junior engineers, fostering technical growth within the team.
- Stay updated on emerging AI models, frameworks, and best practices and introduce relevant innovations to the tech stack.
Candidate Profile
- At least 6 years of experience developing and managing production software solutions.
- Minimum of 2 years hands-on experience delivering LLM-integrated features in practical settings.
- Strong proficiency in backend engineering, especially Python.
- Familiarity with LLM APIs (OpenAI, Anthropic), transformer models, embedding methods, vector database technologies (ChromaDB, Pinecone, Weaviate), prompt engineering, evaluation frameworks, and LLM operations tools.
- Proven track record handling end-to-end ownership of systems, including architecting model trade-offs and leading technical design processes.
- Experience collaborating with UX/product teams and mentoring technical staff.
- Preferred qualifications include a bachelor's degree in fields such as Data Science, Computer Science, Machine Learning, AI, hands-on experience with AI orchestration tools (LangChain, LlamaIndex), knowledge of Model Context Protocol and tool-calling architectures, expertise in semantic search, cloud services, and media analytics.
Growth Plan
- Within the first month: complete onboarding, grasp products and AI roadmap, deliver early feature improvements.
- Within three months: take ownership of a key LLM feature, enhance model quality and evaluation methods, lead design discussions.
- Within six months: lead full-cycle delivery of significant AI features, develop reusable tooling, and improve quality metrics measurably.
- Within a year: become a recognized expert in LLM systems, influence architecture strategy, mentor others, and innovate product capabilities.
Benefits and Compensation
- Comprehensive health and dental insurance fully covered for employees and eligible dependents.
- Matching pension contributions up to 6% of salary.
- Life and disability insurance fully paid by the company.
- Generous leave policy including 25 days paid time off plus public holidays and additional rest days.
- Paid parental leave of 26 weeks full pay for birthing parents and 16 weeks for non-birthing parents.
- Family care support via subsidized child and eldercare services.
- Premium mental health resources with coaching, therapy, and wellness content.
- Annual lifestyle spending account for wellbeing expenses, home office setup stipend, and monthly internet reimbursement.
- Office perks including daily lunch allowance and commuter benefits.
- Charitable donation matching program.
Salary range for this position is €90,000 to €135,000 annually, based on location within Ireland, experience, and skills. Remote work is supported within Ireland. Employment outside the Ireland or EMEA region is not currently available.
