Role overview
Y Projects is seeking a Project Architect / Design Lead to head its design function in Malvern, Melbourne. The studio focuses on carefully considered contemporary extensions to heritage homes across inner-city Melbourne, typically in the $1 million to $3 million range, where detail and craftsmanship are central. Design, costing, and construction are handled together in one integrated workflow.
This is a leadership role for someone who wants full ownership of the design process. You will not be placed in a narrow drafting position or in a design role that is constantly constrained by construction input. Instead, you will guide projects from the first client discussion through to complete documentation and interior resolution, while working alongside a construction team that understands design and is committed to delivering it properly.
Key role focus
- Take responsibility for the full design journey, from initial brief through concept, planning, design development, and interiors.
- Act as the main client contact during the design stage, combining design strength with a reassuring and approachable manner.
- Prepare fully developed documentation using SketchUp and Revit, and create presentation renders in D5, Enscape, or Lumion.
- Coordinate closely with the building team so projects stay aligned with budget as well as design intent.
- Contribute to the growth of the design side of the business.
Requirements
- At least 7 years of experience in residential design, with architectural extensions considered a strong advantage.
- Clear contemporary design sensibility and a strong eye for style.
- Practical knowledge of ResCode, town planning, NCC Volume 2, and applicable Australian Standards.
- Advanced ability in Revit and SketchUp, along with comfort using Microsoft and Canva tools.
- Self-directed, well organised, personable, and comfortable working directly with clients.
Work environment
The role is based in a small, close-knit team at a new office on Malvern Road. The company values a positive workplace, growth, and a sense of fun. The office may also have one or two dogs.
