Park Attendant

Overview

The District of West Vancouver is hiring for park attendant roles in a community known for its parks, beaches, recreation, and arts amenities. These positions support public service and the care of outdoor spaces on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded lands of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations.

There are two openings: one permanent full-time Park Attendant based at Lighthouse Park, and one contract-term temporary full-time Park Attendant – Park Ranger role for an estimated 24 months.

What the role involves

This is hands-on outdoor work focused on park stewardship, visitor interaction, safety, and maintenance. The role suits someone who enjoys working in nature, engaging with the public, and supporting the upkeep of parks and related facilities.

• Help keep park visitors safe by engaging with users and patrolling park areas.
• Explain park rules, bylaws, regulations, and guidance on wildlife interactions.
• Work alongside user groups such as sports organizations, stewardship teams, and event organizers or participants.
• Maintain trails using equipment such as line trimmers, blowers, and hedge trimmers.
• Escalate park issues through the proper channels, including Bylaw, Police, Fire, and other departments.
• Carry out manual tasks related to invasive species control.
• Perform litter pickup, beach cleaning, and general maintenance work.
• Support winter park operations as needed.
• As operational needs require, also assist with turf mowing and upkeep, waste and recycling collection, park construction, graffiti removal, sign and trail upkeep, playground maintenance, and snow clearing.

Working conditions

The work is physically demanding and requires strength, stamina, effort, and the ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions. The successful candidate must be able to work independently with limited supervision.

Qualifications and expectations

Applicants should have an interest in park operations, practical knowledge of landscape maintenance tools, and basic understanding of vegetation care such as weeding, planting, and pruning. Familiarity with native and invasive plants is also important.

Strong public-facing communication, teamwork, customer service, and sound judgment are key. The role also requires the ability to follow departmental policies, practices, rules, and regulations while making appropriate decisions on the job.

Experience driving large trucks in and around parks, streets, and pedestrians is required. Experience with tractors, ride-on mowers, and chainsaws would be an asset.

Selection requirements

Employment details

This is a unionized position (WVMEA). The hours are 40 per week, and the schedule may vary, including weekends.

The pay rate starts at $30.88 per hour based on the 2025 rate. The compensation structure includes three steps that increase after a set number of hours worked.
