Job Overview
The Junior HSE Advisor role entails assisting multiple projects and facilities in fulfilling the requirements of Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) Management Systems. This position involves working with site teams and management to identify hazards through inspections and reduce risks by maintaining and improving HSE standards. The Junior HSE Advisor will support health and safety initiatives, ensure compliance with legislation, and actively champion a culture of workplace safety.
Key Responsibilities
- Establish detailed hazard assessments, procedures, and job practices to maintain safe working conditions.
- Independently lead safety inspections and collaborate with teams to enforce safety protocols.
- Encourage early identification and reporting of safety indicators to strengthen proactive safety efforts.
- Assist supervisors and management in addressing and correcting identified safety gaps and hazards.
- Coach employees, supervisors, visitors, and contractors on safe work methods, promoting a safety-conscious culture.
- Help instill a safety-first mindset while supporting safe production activities.
- Conduct orientation sessions for newcomers and support supervisors in onboarding processes.
- Participate in first aid response duties, ensure supplies are replenished, and support timely emergency actions.
- Support the health and safety program through a variety of initiatives: hazard assessments, on-the-job training, competency verification, incident reporting, inspections, and emergency drills.
- Make regular rounds to all Steelhaus locations during operational periods to ensure safety compliance.
- Deliver effective safety presentations, meetings, and training sessions tailored to workers and leadership.
Required Skills and Experience
- Between 1 to 3 years of hands-on experience in occupational health and safety in workplace settings.
- Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) certification is preferred.
- Exposure to manufacturing environments is advantageous.
- Familiarity with Alberta Occupational Health & Safety legislation.
- Ability to interpret, explain, and implement legislation, regulations, and company policies.
- Proven aptitude for identifying and resolving safety issues efficiently and proactively.
- Strong communication abilities, capable of conveying ideas clearly at all levels in an organization.
- Self-motivated and able to work independently with effective time management.
- Working knowledge of core safety functions such as hazard recognition, incident investigation, and ergonomics.
- Effective communication skills via telephone, email, and text messaging.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office suite including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
