About the Department
The Global Centre for Contextual Safeguarding (GCCS) was established in September 2025, evolving from over ten years of pioneering work in the Contextual Safeguarding Programme. It functions within Durham University's Sociology Department—recognized as the top department for Criminology in the Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2024 and ranked 4th for impact in REF 2021. The GCCS is an interdisciplinary hub collaborating across Law, Business, Education, and Psychology departments and spanning four university faculties. Its mission focuses on transforming how societies safeguard young people beyond their home environments, aiming to create systems that recognize the limits of parental protection and foster sustainable, shared responsibility for safeguarding.
Role Overview
The Centre is recruiting a part-time Research Assistant, reporting to the Senior Leadership Team, to enhance research and operational efforts across multiple workstreams. This position emphasizes integrating the perspectives of children and young people into the Centre's evolving projects.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with fellow research assistants to review and map existing research relevant to the Centre's goals.
- Translate knowledge generated by Centre staff into user-friendly, practical resources.
- Assist with a variety of research and operational duties supporting ongoing projects.
- Contribute to the development of funding applications to support Centre activities.
Requirements and Eligibility
Applicants should possess a strong interest in social justice. While diverse academic and professional backgrounds are welcomed, ideal candidates may hold or be pursuing a Masters degree in Sociology or Social Research Methods.
Work Environment and Additional Information
The GCCS operates using a hybrid model due to projects taking place across various UK locations and beyond. Research involves both in-person visits to multiple sites and remote data collection methods. Centre activities primarily occur online, with occasional face-to-face meetings and working days. Travel required for research, dissemination, and impact initiatives will be funded by the Centre. The primary workplace is Durham, and attendance in Durham for essential business will be coordinated with the line manager.
