Job Overview
As a Cook within the Canadian Armed Forces, you will be responsible for preparing nutritious meals for military personnel and National Defence staff. Your duties will cover a broad range from cafeteria-style food preparation to formal multi-course meals for military and civilian dignitaries.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare and serve various types of meals, including formal and casual menus.
- Assist with the handling and management of food and non-food supplies.
- Adhere to workplace health and safety standards rigorously.
- Accommodate religious and spiritual dietary needs.
- Ensure food safety and Defence compliance.
- Operate, maintain, and clean kitchen equipment and facilities.
Work Environment and Deployment
Cooks may work across multiple environments within Canada or on overseas deployments. Most are stationed at bases and wings, others may serve with land operational units, or aboard ships and submarines. Regular Force members will likely be relocated during their career based on postings; however, Primary Reserve Force members typically serve part-time at specific Reserve units without relocation obligations.
Entry and Training
Applicants must have completed Grade 10 (or Secondary 4 in Quebec) including relevant math courses. Those with a college diploma or certificate in food services or culinary arts may be eligible for adjusted training placement. Foreign education credentials may be accepted.
The Non-Commissioned Member Subsidized Training and Education Plan (NCMSTEP) offers paid education, where recruits attend approved Canadian colleges and receive full salary and benefits during training, in exchange for a service commitment.
Training begins with Basic Military Qualification at the Canadian Forces Leadership and Recruit School, focusing on fundamental military skills and physical fitness. Specialized cook training occurs at the Canadian Forces Logistics Training Centre in Borden, Ontario, where cooks learn cooking techniques, safety, cost control, equipment maintenance, and more.
Further professional development is available with courses in red seal certification, submarine service, flight stewardship, food and beverage management, and advanced food safety.
Part-Time Opportunities
Reserve Force members can serve part-time, typically one night per week and some weekends, while balancing civilian employment or education. They serve with the Army, Navy, or Air Force at local reserve units, receiving comparable training to Regular Force members and are paid for training and service time with benefits and pension contributions.
