Role Overview

The Broadcast Engineering Manager will lead strategy, technical operations, infrastructure upgrades, media technology integration, and efforts to ensure broadcast reliability. This position manages broadcast systems throughout production, transmission, and distribution while directing teams accountable for uptime, technical quality, innovation, cybersecurity, and operational excellence.

Key Responsibilities

  • Formulate and execute broadcast engineering strategies, technical standards, modernization plans, and technology investment initiatives.
  • Oversee engineering operations across various broadcast environments including studios, outside broadcasts, control rooms, master control, playout, transmission, streaming, and media platforms.
  • Work collaboratively with operations, production, IT, network engineering, cybersecurity, procurement, vendors, and executive leadership.
  • Design, maintain, and enhance broadcast infrastructure comprising cameras, vision and audio systems, switchers, routers, servers, storage, automation, monitoring, intercom, timing, encoding/decoding, and transmission systems.
  • Manage integration of IP-based broadcast technologies leveraging SMPTE ST 2110, NMOS, AES67, PTP, SDI, NDI, and other media transport standards.
  • Lead transformative projects including SDI-to-IP migration, cloud broadcasting, software-defined production, remote workflows, virtualized infrastructure, and hybrid broadcast solutions.
  • Manage full project lifecycles from technical requirements through procurement, implementation, commissioning, testing, and support.
  • Establish maintenance regimes, lifecycle management, redundancy, disaster recovery, business continuity, and resilience programs to maximize availability.
  • Track KPIs such as uptime, reliability, incident metrics, maintenance efficiency, and project delivery.
  • Lead incident response for broadcast disruptions spanning failures, outages, synchronization issues, cybersecurity events, and critical interruptions.
  • Develop and enforce engineering standards encompassing signal quality, redundancy, documentation, change management, monitoring, and maintenance protocols.
  • Manage vendor relationships with equipment manufacturers, integrators, telecom providers, satellite operators, cloud and streaming platforms, and consultants.
  • Administer budgets including CAPEX and OPEX for equipment procurement, upgrades, maintenance contracts, licensing, and infrastructure investments.
  • Drive digital transformation through adoption of cloud production, AI-enhanced workflows, automated quality control, intelligent monitoring, machine learning anomaly detection, and virtual production techniques.
  • Leverage technologies from industry-leading vendors such as Ross Video, Grass Valley, EVS, Evertz, Imagine Communications, Lawo, Vizrt, Harmonic, Sony, Blackmagic Design, Avid, Dalet, Telestream, AWS, Microsoft Azure, and others.
  • Partner with cybersecurity teams to implement controls including network segmentation, access management, endpoint security, secure remote access, vulnerability management, and incident response.
  • Prepare executive reports, technical assessments, project updates, reliability dashboards, investment cases, incident reviews, and strategic roadmaps for senior leadership.
  • Lead and mentor multidisciplinary engineering teams fostering a culture emphasizing reliability, technical excellence, innovation, safety, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

Candidate Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Broadcast Engineering, Electrical/Electronics Engineering, Telecommunications, Computer Engineering, Information Technology, Media Technology, or related field.
  • Master's degree in related disciplines such as Broadcast Engineering, Media Technology, Telecommunications, or Engineering Management is highly preferred.
  • Professional certifications in broadcast technology, networking, cloud computing, project management, or cybersecurity considered advantageous.
  • At least 5 years’ experience in broadcast engineering, media technology, television or radio engineering, telecommunications, or related technical roles.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience managing broadcast engineering teams, overseeing infrastructure projects, or leading multidisciplinary technical programs preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of broadcast production, transmission, signal processing, audio/video systems, SDI, IP video, SMPTE ST 2110, AES67, PTP, NMOS, broadcast networking, media servers, automation, playout, encoding, decoding, streaming, and technical monitoring.
  • Experience with platforms and products from leading vendors such as Ross Video, Grass Valley, EVS, Evertz, Imagine Communications, Lawo, Vizrt, Harmonic, Sony, Blackmagic Design, Avid, Dalet, Telestream, AWS, and Microsoft Azure.
  • Familiarity with cloud broadcasting, virtual production, AI-enabled quality control, automated monitoring, remote workflows, software-defined broadcasting, IP media networks, and advanced broadcast workflows preferred.
  • Demonstrated leadership, communication, troubleshooting, project management, stakeholder engagement, budgeting, vendor administration, analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Proven ability to handle multiple engineering initiatives balancing technical reliability, content requirements, cybersecurity, budgets, modernization, regulatory compliance, and timelines.
  • Capability to function effectively in a remote setting with distributed teams and willingness to travel occasionally for project work, equipment commissioning, live event support, vendor meetings, and emergencies.
