Position Overview
The Technical Director will manage the technical components of all theatrical productions within the department, working closely alongside Scenic, Lighting, Sound, and Costume Designers in addition to coordinating with the department chair, administrative assistant, costume shop manager, and box office manager.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee the operational management and upkeep of two performance spaces located in the Trahern building, including budget administration, equipment maintenance, and procurement.
- Supervise student workers in both the scene shop and performance areas, ensuring thorough training on health and safety procedures.
- Coordinate scheduling for rehearsals and performances.
- Keep detailed documentation of equipment maintenance, inspections, and schedules for replacements.
- Support the upkeep of the department’s website and associated event calendars.
Required Knowledge and Skills
- Capacity to prepare sets, lighting, and sound for theatrical presentations effectively.
- Experience directing the building, installation, and rigging of stage scenery, while providing technical support in lighting, sound, and properties.
- Proficient in interacting respectfully and professionally with a varied audience including university community members and the general public.
- Strong leadership abilities in overseeing and coordinating tasks among students and other staff.
- Competence in maintaining accurate equipment inventories and rental records.
- Good communication skills coupled with the ability to uphold confidentiality.
- Familiarity with scenic construction and painting techniques relevant to Theatre and Dance.
Physical Demands
This position entails performing heavy physical tasks requiring occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds, frequent exertion up to 50 pounds, and constant exertion up to 20 pounds to move various objects.
Qualifications
- A Bachelor’s degree (BA or BFA) is mandatory; a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) is preferred.
- Proven background in carpentry, rigging, and welding, complemented by experience using CAD software.
- Knowledge of stage lighting and sound is advantageous.
