About the Role
The Population Screening and Cancer Prevention (PSCP) unit, Tasmania's leading authority on cancer prevention, invites applications for a permanent position as a Specialist Breast Radiologist. This role is based at the Tasmanian Breast Cancer Centre, a new integrated facility in Hobart that consolidates BreastScreen Tasmania’s screening and assessment services alongside the Diagnostic Breast Imaging Service to improve breast care access statewide.
The specialist will provide expert outpatient breast radiology services including conducting and interpreting diagnostic imaging, advising clinical teams, and contributing to research and quality improvements. The position is embedded in a multidisciplinary team with opportunities for teaching, continuous professional development, and involvement in service innovations. The centre emphasizes patient-centered, safe, and compassionate care.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver specialist breast radiology diagnostic services and expert clinical interpretations.
- Conduct radiological examinations and provide clinical advice to medical and allied health staff.
- Participate actively in research projects and service quality improvement initiatives.
- Engage in quality assurance including peer reviews and continuous evaluation.
- Supervise and teach undergraduate, postgraduate, and trainee medical personnel.
- Ensure empathetic, clear communication with patients and families to support patient-centered care.

PSCP administers Tasmania's cancer screening programs including BreastScreen Australia, National Bowel Cancer Screening, and National Cervical Screening Program. It collaborates closely with the Royal Hobart Hospital's Department of Medical Imaging for cross-service integration.

Remuneration and Benefits
- Salary follows the Medical Practitioners (Public Sector) Award, ranging from AUD 222,789 to AUD 305,539 based on experience and level, with additional increments possible.
- Eligibility for Senior Specialist salary band ($309,222 to $319,701) depends on meeting award criteria.
- Allowances include a pro rata market allowance ($95,000), a fully maintained private vehicle or vehicle allowance ($28,786), and a professional development allowance ($17,483).
- Approval-dependent additional payment of 35% base salary via the Private Patient Scheme or equivalent.

Essential Requirements
- Specialist registration as a Medical Practitioner, or
- International Medical Graduate (IMG) on the specialist registration pathway.
- IMGs with recognized overseas specialist qualifications assessed as sufficiently experienced.
Desirable Qualifications
- Proficiency in breast imaging techniques including biopsy and localisation procedures.
Additional Information
Employment depends on clinical credentialing and approval by the Credentials and Clinical Privileges Committee. The role involves 76 hours per fortnight, day shifts. This recruitment process may fill future similar vacancies in full-time, part-time, or casual capacity within 12 months.
