Role overview
Tirlán is a food and nutrition co-operative with a broad mix of ingredients, consumer brands and agri brands. The business operates across Ireland, the US, MEA and China, with annual revenue of around €3 billion and a workforce of about 2,000 people supporting 11 processing plants and 52 agri branches. Its purpose is to help nourish people while protecting the environment for future generations.
The Payroll Manager will report to the Senior Manager – Shared Services and take ownership of payroll operations across the organisation. The role focuses on accurate and timely processing of pay, wages, benefits and statutory deductions, while ensuring full compliance with applicable laws and company policies. This person will also serve as the key contact for payroll queries and will guide the payroll team with expert support.
Responsibilities
- Direct and develop the payroll team, encouraging strong performance, ownership of outcomes and delivery against KPIs and service standards.
- Oversee the full payroll cycle for all employees, including expenses and benefits in kind, and make sure deadlines are met without compromising accuracy.
- Ensure payroll activities follow all relevant legislation, regulations and accepted practices, including PAYE, PRSI and pension deductions.
- Keep payroll systems and records current, accurate and secure, with proper data integrity and confidentiality safeguards.
- Prepare and file statutory returns and reports with Revenue and any other applicable authorities.
- Investigate and resolve payroll errors, and handle employee questions promptly and professionally.
- Work closely with HR and Finance to align payroll processes with wider business needs and workflows.
- Review payroll processes regularly to identify improvements and implement updates where needed.
- Track changes in payroll law and share important updates with relevant stakeholders.
- Support internal and external audits by supplying documents and addressing any issues identified.
- Identify payroll risks early and put appropriate mitigation measures in place.
- Maintain continuity plans so payroll operations can continue effectively if disruptions occur.
- Carry out other duties as required.
Requirements
- A relevant qualification such as PPM or CPT, or an equivalent credential, is preferred.
- Prior payroll management experience is needed, ideally in a medium to large organisation.
- Strong working knowledge of payroll legislation, processes and systems such as SAP is important.
- Demonstrated leadership capability and experience managing a team.
- Very strong accuracy, organisation and attention to detail.
- Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information discreetly.
- Clear communication skills and good interpersonal ability.
