Role Overview
As a Payroll and Benefits Administrator within the People Operations team, you will manage comprehensive payroll processing, with particular attention to California's complex wage and hour laws. Using primarily UKG systems, you will ensure timely, precise payroll execution and benefit administration to support a growing employee base.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage semi-monthly payroll via UKG Pro and Workforce Management ensuring compliance with state wage and hour laws.
- Perform detailed audits of payroll data to identify and correct discrepancies prior to payroll closing.
- Address employee inquiries regarding payroll, resolving questions and discrepancies swiftly.
- Handle payroll issues including tax, garnishments, and system setup.
- Assist managers with payroll-related concerns such as timecard reviews and approval workflows.
- Administer employee benefits operations including enrollments, life event processing, terminations, and carrier communication.
- Maintain accurate employee data in UKG concerning pay rates, deductions, and taxes.
- Support year-end processes including W-2 generation, commission letter management, and reconciliation.
- Oversee 401(k) plan administration, performing regular analysis and ensuring compliance.
- Perform additional duties as assigned to meet organizational needs.
Success Milestones
- Within 30 days: Complete UKG onboarding and process payroll cycles with supervision demonstrating accuracy.
- Within 60 days: Independently process payroll applying California’s regulations and proactively flag exceptions.
- Within 90 days: Fully manage payroll end-to-end, reconcile discrepancies without escalation, and ensure compliance.
- Within 1 year: Maintain impeccable, timely payroll with no compliance errors, improve UKG processes, and act as a go-to resource for California payroll inquiries.
Candidate Profile
- Minimum of 2 years experience in full-cycle payroll processing.
- Proficient with UKG Pro, Kronos, or similar payroll/HRIS systems.
- Thorough understanding of California payroll regulations including overtime, meal/rest break premiums, and final pay laws.
- Knowledgeable in federal payroll compliance such as FLSA, tax withholding, and W-2 reporting.
- Skilled in Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets for audit and reconciliation purposes.
- Meticulous with strong problem-solving and critical thinking capabilities.
- Associate degree or higher in Accounting, Business, or related field, or equivalent experience.
- Experience managing multi-state payroll is advantageous.
Compensation and Benefits
The annual salary range is $68,000 to $80,000. Benefits include flexible hybrid work arrangements, at least three weeks of paid time off annually, complimentary therapy coverage (for enrolled medical plan members), comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance with HSA and FSA options, employer-covered disability and life insurance, up to seven weeks salary continuation on short-term disability, eight weeks paid parental leave plus additional STD benefits if applicable, 401(k) plan with 100% match up to 4% vesting immediately, annual company gathering travel, fourteen holidays, year-end company shutdown, plus supplemental life, pet insurance, commuter benefits, and more.
