Role Overview
Bay Ferries Limited is recruiting Oilers for its Marine Engineering team to support the safe and reliable operation of the MV Fundy Rose on the Digby, NS / Saint John, NB route. This is a full-time role that is seasonal under the Collective Agreement. The Oiler reports to the Engineer of the Watch and helps keep the vessel’s machinery and engineering systems running efficiently.
Key Duties
- Keep engine-room watches and monitor machinery and equipment during operations.
- Assist engineers with the safe running of engine-room systems and related equipment.
- Support maintenance and repair work on machinery, water systems, and sewage systems.
- Manage lubricating oil and cooling oil supplies.
- Clean, chip, and paint machinery spaces and ship tanks as needed.
- Maintain logs for machinery and record operational details accurately.
- Use tools and equipment safely and keep them in good condition.
- Promptly notify the Engineer on Watch about any equipment issues or unusual conditions.
- Take part in emergency drills and all required training activities.
- Work in line with company rules, procedures, and the Safety Management System (SMS).
- Help maintain a workplace that is safe, professional, and respectful.
Qualifications and Certifications
Applicants should hold the required marine documentation and be prepared to meet the role’s operational and safety expectations.
- Valid Candidate Document Number (CDN)
- Seafarer’s Medical Certificate
- Engine Room Rating (ERR) Certificate
- STCW Basic Safety
- Survival Craft and Rescue Boats certification (other than Fast Rescue Boats)
- Advanced Fire Fighting certification
- Passenger Safety Management Certificate of Endorsement
- Continuous Certificate of Discharge (Discharge Book)
- Commitment to a just-cause safety culture
Additional Requirements
- Prior experience on passenger vessels is an advantage.
- A strong focus on safe working practices is essential.
- Ability to work both independently and cooperatively within a team.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
- Capability to respond effectively in emergency situations.

Working Conditions
The job follows rotating shifts in accordance with the Collective Agreement. Most work is carried out in the vessel’s engine room, with some outdoor tasks performed in changing weather. The position involves standing and walking for long periods, frequent bending and climbing, moderate lifting, and exposure to hot, cold, and noisy environments.
