Role Overview
The Library Assistant is responsible for offering a friendly and welcoming atmosphere to patrons and visitors, ensuring a positive experience at the Library. The role involves handling general inquiries effectively, guiding users through self-service equipment, and maintaining adherence to library policies and standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Greet and assist all Library users warmly, creating an inviting first impression.
- Manage general library questions and concerns, applying sound judgment to resolve issues.
- Demonstrate and instruct patrons on using self-service tools and equipment available in the Library.
- Take delegated charge to uphold compliance with applicable policies and quality standards.
- Oversee daily circulation operations including upkeep of library collections, shelving, and equipment such as computers, printers, and copiers; perform routine inspections and resolve or escalate problems as required.
- Update and maintain circulation data, acquisition reports, and other standard records following established templates.
- Prepare and maintain accurate reading lists and coordinate textbook orders with faculty members.
- Contribute to the Library’s strategic development by participating in goal-setting, policy formulation, project teams and improvement initiatives.
- Create and keep current procedure manuals relevant to Library operations.
- Provide standby support to the main reception desk when required.
- Act as the Library’s representative both within the University and in professional settings as necessary.
- Promote workplace safety consistent with institutional standards.
- Engage in ongoing professional development and support training and mentoring for new staff and interns.
- Carry out other duties relevant to the role as assigned by University management.
Qualifications and Experience
- Possession of a relevant post-secondary degree is essential.
- Previous practical experience in a University Library environment is preferred.
Personal Attributes and Skills
- Ability to remain calm and effective when interacting with diverse University stakeholders including students, faculty, staff, and visitors.
- Capable of portraying confidence and a positive attitude in public engagements.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the capacity to interact persuasively and sensitively across a range of university members.
- Proficient in operating computing devices, printers, and copiers commonly used in a library setting.
- Advanced skills in Microsoft Office and familiarity with databases and online resource interfaces.
- Excellent written and verbal communication capabilities.
- A committed team player passionate about delivering high-quality library services with accuracy and a practical mindset.
- Strong organizational skills to prioritize tasks and manage workloads efficiently.
- Self-driven with the ability to take initiative and work under minimal supervision.
- Awareness of youth perspectives and sensitivity to cultural diversity within the University community.
