Legal & Compliance Lead

About the Role

An established international energy and commodities trading firm, supported by a reputable refining group, seeks to recruit a Legal & Compliance Lead or Manager for its Singapore trading hub. This key position is ideal for legal professionals experienced in physical commodities, energy trading, or oil and gas sectors, aiming to contribute strategically to international trading operations across Asia.

Key Responsibilities

• Prepare, examine, and negotiate commercial contracts relevant to physical commodity trading activities.
• Provide support for derivatives and paper trading agreements, including ISDA and associated legal documents.
• Offer legal advice regarding shipping matters, logistics, charterparty agreements, bills of lading, demurrage claims, and maritime dispute resolution.
• Oversee KYC, anti-money laundering (AML), sanctions screening, and carry out thorough counterparty due diligence.
• Support legal aspects related to trade finance transactions, such as letters of credit, guarantees, and banking documentation.
• Manage commercial disputes, arbitration, and litigation when needed.
• Review existing compliance policies and frameworks, enhancing governance and internal control systems.

Candidate Requirements

• Possession of a law degree (LL.B., LL.M., or J.D.) with bar admission preferably in Singapore, UK, China, or other common law jurisdictions.
• At least five years’ experience in legal and compliance roles within commodity trading, energy, oil and gas, petrochemicals sectors, or specialized maritime/energy law practices.
• In-depth understanding of international trade law, shipping regulations, sanctions, AML regulations, and commodity trading contract documentation.
• Background in supporting physical commodity deals and trade finance transactions.
• Strong commercial acumen with an ability to operate effectively in a dynamic, fast-paced international trading environment.
• Fluency in English and Mandarin to facilitate communication with regional teams and headquarters.
