About the Role
Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, New York is Central New York’s only academic medical center. Its network includes Upstate University Hospital, Upstate University Hospital at Community General, Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital, and multiple satellite locations. As the region’s largest employer, the university has 9,460 employees. The team is seeking dependable, hardworking individuals for janitor roles across different shifts and sites. Both part-time and full-time opportunities are available.
Job Summary
This position is responsible for the cleaning, maintenance, and general upkeep of assigned buildings or designated areas. Work covers all public spaces, patient-care areas, and staff areas, with daily cleaning duties expected throughout the facility.
Key Duties
The janitor may also support or guide Cleaners when needed by assigning work, giving direction, offering hands-on assistance, and monitoring progress on a daily basis. Additional duties include helping solve work-related issues, coordinating tasks, assisting with special assignments, checking progress during the workday, and making sure jobs are finished on time. The role also involves enforcing safety practices, verifying that assigned staff are covering their areas, and training employees when required.
Typical cleaning tasks include mopping, scrubbing, buffing, and waxing floors; washing corridors, stairways, stairwells, walls, and partitions; and cleaning lavatories, rooms, and other facilities. The role requires safe use of hand-operated equipment, detergents, and other cleaning products.
Physical and Communication Requirements
Applicants must be able to bend, lift, climb, walk, stand, and stoop for extended periods, and must be capable of moderate to heavy lifting. The job also requires the ability to climb ladders and scaffolds, follow spoken instructions and simple written directions, read and write, and communicate verbally to exchange information. Strong customer service and leadership abilities are important for success in this role.
Work Schedule
Part-time and full-time janitor positions are available for a variety of shifts and locations.
