About The Colorado State Public Defender
The Colorado Office of the State Public Defender (OSPD) is a prominent independent agency within the Judicial Branch, comprised of nearly 1,000 employees working across multiple regional offices and centralized divisions. The OSPD provides constitutionally mandated legal defense services to those accused of crimes who cannot afford private counsel, focusing on zealous and compassionate representation.
Position Overview
This Investigator I role is an entry-level position within a professional series, expected to gain foundational knowledge and expertise in policies, investigative techniques, and organizational procedures. Employees work under close supervision, receiving regular guidance from experienced staff while learning to effectively support criminal defense investigations. Advancement to Investigator II level is anticipated as competencies develop.
Key Responsibilities
- Organize and prepare case files by indexing client information, court dates, charges, bonds, discovery, and attorney notes to facilitate efficient case management and quick access to relevant data.
- Assist in preparing investigations and witness/victim interviews through thorough review of discovery materials and coordination with attorneys and clients.
- Collaborate closely with defense attorneys to understand case strategy, applicable laws, and ethical considerations to guide investigative efforts.
- Maintain consistent communication with attorneys to report case status, manage court schedules, track witnesses, and clarify investigation priorities.
- Document all investigative activities with detailed and comprehensive records.
- Understand and apply ethical standards relevant to investigative tasks, consulting with legal and managerial staff as needed.
- Conduct field investigations, including collecting client records, serving subpoenas, examining crime scenes and physical evidence, and interviewing witnesses. Prepare detailed reports summarizing findings.
- Utilize investigative tools including audio recorders, cameras, computers, measurement devices, and maps to support evidence gathering.
- Provide assistance in trial and hearing preparation, including exhibit organization, client assistance, witness coordination, and understanding courtroom protocols.
- Learn and follow mandated cost procedures and internal policies for accurate processing of necessary documentation.
- Develop skills to testify accurately and truthfully in defense proceedings when required.
- Complete post-trial follow-ups such as jurisdiction canvassing and coordination of client property returns.
- Manage daily schedules effectively, including working outside standard hours as needed.
- Travel regularly within Colorado and occasionally overnight or out of state to support investigations.
- Support other regional offices as assigned and participate in required meetings and trainings.
