Role Overview
This position supports a correctional institution by handling the upkeep, inspection, and repair of security-related equipment and related facility systems. The role works under general supervision and is responsible for keeping essential mechanical and electrical security components operating properly.
Key Duties
- Carry out preventive maintenance and repairs on institutional security hardware, including mechanical locks, electrical locks, cell door locks, maximum-security components, and door mechanisms.
- Inspect, maintain, and fix security fire doors.
- Review and approve supply and equipment requests tied to security-equipment maintenance, and prepare corresponding cost estimates.
- Create requisitions for tools, security keys, locks, and materials needed to maintain security equipment.
- Track and manage spare parts so emergency repairs can be completed quickly.
- Participate in a rotating on-call schedule and respond to minor issues in other facility areas such as plumbing and HVAC.
- Directly oversee inmate workers assigned to support maintenance tasks.
Training Requirement
On hire, the selected candidate must complete four weeks of SCDC Basic Training.
Minimum Qualifications
- As a general state requirement, applicants should have a high school diploma plus trades-related experience in the field; equivalent practical experience may be considered in place of the diploma on a year-for-year basis.
- For SCDC, candidates must have a high school diploma and at least 3 years of professional experience in institutional general maintenance, construction, and repair.
