Job description
Position Summary
This role involves moving freight throughout the dock area to and from trailers, ensuring the security and accurate documentation of shipments. Workers need to be adaptable with different shift timings.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate motorized and manual equipment such as forklifts, electric pallet jacks, and hand trucks to handle freight.
- Check that freight documentation corresponds accurately to goods including type, weight, and hazardous materials using electronic or manual verification systems.
- Adhere strictly to safety and loading guidelines, using tools like straps and boards to organize and secure freight loading.
- Manage repair or reclamation of damaged freight when necessary.
- Follow all safety regulations to mitigate risks related to hazards such as chemical spills and dangerous goods transport.
- Complete tasks assigned under company policies including yard checks.
- Provide support to customers requiring assistance with freight or documentation.
- Maintain cleanliness and orderliness of the facility and trailers.
- Support onboarding and mentoring of newly hired freight handlers.
- Comply with relevant laws and internal company rules.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Skills Needed
- High school diploma or equivalent certification.
- Experience in warehouse operations, freight handling, forklift use, or cross dock environments.
- Forklift operator certification or ability to obtain one within the probation period.
- Physical capacity to handle freight manually, including lifting dock plates (~100 lbs) and opening trailer doors (~75 lbs).
- Capability to perform physical activities like bending, squatting, twisting, and pushing or pulling freight during shifts.
- Basic numerical skills with or without a calculator.
- Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
- Willingness and aptitude to follow instructions and complete necessary training in person and online.
- Strong problem-solving abilities coupled with attention to detail.
- Basic computer literacy with a readiness to learn new systems and software.
- Effective verbal, reading, and written communication skills.
- Bilingualism in English and French is preferred; mandatory in Quebec.
Working Conditions
- Shifts may vary based on operational demands.
- Must be able to hear warnings such as horns and backup signals in a busy dock and yard environment.
- Work involves exposure to varying weather and environmental conditions, including fumes, dust, and noise.
- Fast-paced setting with frequent interaction with service personnel and strict adherence to deadlines.
