Database Engineering Team Manager

About the Role

Squarespace provides innovative backend infrastructure management, overseeing key technologies such as MongoDB, CockroachDB, and Kafka to ensure reliable and scalable services for their platform. The Databases team supports both product engineering partners and end users by delivering robust and future-ready infrastructure solutions. This position is hybrid-based, requiring presence in the Dublin office three days per week, and reports to the Senior Engineering Manager of Databases.

Key Responsibilities

• Mentor and guide software engineers through ambiguous scenarios.
• Define the team’s focus and recruit a balanced group of engineers for strong collaboration.
• Support continuous career growth of direct reports through regular one-on-one feedback sessions.
• Recognize team achievements to foster a positive and dynamic workplace culture.
• Continuously assess and enhance team efficiency and effectiveness as needed.
• Develop an in-depth understanding of local system architecture to inform design decisions.
• Collaborate with Product, Design, and Engineering teams to define and deliver an optimal development roadmap.
• Build strong relationships across multiple departments including Marketing, Data Science, and Business Operations.

Candidate Profile

• Minimum of 3 years managing product engineering teams with at least four engineers.
• Over 7 years of professional experience deploying applications involving large, multifaceted codebases.
• Proficient in communicating complex technical topics to non-technical stakeholders clearly and effectively.
• Strong technical background enabling informed decision-making amid engineering trade-offs.
• Leadership style focused on cultivating an inclusive environment prioritizing psychological safety alongside technical excellence.

Compensation and Additional Information

The salary range for this position is €93,000 to €143,000 EUR, depending on skills, experience, and location. Eligible employees may also receive stock options.
