Position overview
The Azure & Microsoft 365 Administrator is part of a close-knit IT group that works alongside the IT Director, Helpdesk Technician, Systems Architect, and Analytics team. The role focuses on administering, protecting, and keeping Microsoft 365 and Azure running smoothly, while also acting as the main escalation contact for technical problems that go beyond first-line support. Strong service orientation, clear communication, and a genuine desire to help users are important to succeed in this position. As the business expands, the scope of the job may shift to reflect changing priorities, new technology work, and occasional support for related or subsidiary organizations.
This role profile outlines the main duties and expectations, but it is not an exhaustive list. The employee may be asked to carry out other job-related tasks and follow additional instructions from the supervisor as needed.
Microsoft 365 administration
- Support and administer the Microsoft 365 stack, including Exchange Online, SharePoint, Teams, and OneDrive.
- Handle licensing, tenant settings, security controls, and Defender for Office 365 policy management.
- Keep services available, performant, and secure through continuous monitoring and administration.
Azure cloud administration
- Oversee Azure subscriptions, virtual machines, storage, and core network resources.
- Support cloud connectivity and protection across virtual networks, security groups, DNS, firewalls, and hybrid setups.
- Track resource consumption and cloud spend, and look for ways to improve efficiency.
Identity and access management
- Manage Microsoft Entra ID user provisioning, group administration, and identity governance activities.
- Maintain Conditional Access, multi-factor authentication, privileged access, and passwordless authentication solutions.
- Ensure access to systems and information remains secure and compliant.
Endpoint management
- Administer device lifecycle tasks in Microsoft Intune, including enrollment, compliance rules, app deployment, and Autopilot setup.
- Support endpoint protection by working with Microsoft Defender tools.
Security operations
- Review, investigate, and respond to security alerts and incidents across the Microsoft security environment.
- Maintain Microsoft Defender and Sentinel settings, analytics, and monitoring capabilities.
- Record investigations, corrective actions, and security guidance.
Infrastructure and collaboration
- Apply security and infrastructure best practices around redundancy, segmentation, and least-privilege access.
- Work with the Systems Architect on initiatives tied to Microsoft 365, Azure, identity, or security platforms.
- Help drive technology improvements that strengthen reliability, scalability, and operational efficiency.
User support and escalation
- Serve as the primary escalation resource for issues that cannot be resolved by Tier 1 support.
- Provide helpdesk backup when needed and work toward prompt resolution of user problems.
- Partner with the Analytics team on data access, reporting tools, and governance needs.
Experience and education
A bachelor’s degree in information technology or a related discipline is preferred. The role calls for at least 3 years of progressive IT experience, including prior work in Tier 2 support, systems administration, or infrastructure-oriented IT positions. Experience with Microsoft Sentinel is expected, along with familiarity with ERP systems such as NetSuite. The ideal candidate can apply industry best practices and solve practical technical issues. Experience with website management, SEO, and digital marketing platforms is also part of the preferred background.
Certifications
Professional certifications are appreciated but not mandatory. Helpful credentials include AZ-104, MS-102, SC-300, SC-200, MD-102, AZ-700, CompTIA Security+, and CompTIA Network+.
Working conditions
The job is usually based in a general office environment and may be remote. Work is mostly sedentary, though standing and walking can take up as much as 10% of the day. The setting is typically comfortable, with adequate lighting and temperature, and no unusual noise or other unpleasant conditions. Standard office equipment is used regularly, including computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines. Day-to-day work includes repetitive PC tasks, telephone work, and live meetings.
Physical requirements
The role requires the ability to lift up to 20 pounds without difficulty. While performing the job, the employee must be able to speak, listen, read, write, and communicate fluently in English. Standing, walking, using hands to handle or feel objects, and reaching with arms are also frequent requirements.
