Role Overview
This position is based in Greater Accra Region and Upper West Region, Ghana. The Transport Specialist will oversee the planning and optimization of product movements, with the goal of ensuring timely deliveries to buyers, smooth internal transfers, strong fleet use, and ongoing control of cost, compliance, and transport performance.
Key Duties
- Create and maintain the weekly transport plan so delivery execution stays close to 100% on-time, in-full performance.
- Run coordination discussions with Operations and Logistics teams to align weekly schedules.
- Check transport records and reporting tools for completeness and accuracy, including the Post Tracker, Fumigation Table, and other official documents.
- Plan and schedule daily and weekly movement of products between hubs, mega hubs, and warehouses.
- Improve routing decisions to cut unnecessary transfers and strengthen stock placement.
- Assign company-owned, rented, and contractor vehicles according to delivery and transfer needs.
- Track fleet performance, fuel use, maintenance timing, and vehicle availability.
- Keep transport paperwork current, including permits, logs, maintenance files, and insurance documents.
- Manage driver allocation, expected performance, and adherence to company rules.
- Review transport cost per ton, fleet use, downtime, and route results to identify improvements.
- Build and maintain relationships with transport vendors and negotiate service terms and pricing.
- Take part in weekly Logistics Committee meetings and continuous improvement efforts.
- Support the introduction and daily use of the Transport Management System, Odoo, and data dashboards.
- Monitor transport budget performance, route economics, and monthly carrier-wise cost reporting.
- Handle claims, insurance documentation, and compliance with health, safety, and sustainability requirements.
- Carry out other duties assigned by the Logistics Manager in support of department objectives and operations.
Requirements
- A bachelor’s degree in Transport Management, Logistics, Supply Chain Management, or a related discipline.
- At least 8 years of hands-on experience in transportation planning, fleet coordination, logistics operations, or supply chain management.
- Prior exposure to 3PL providers, truck suppliers, or commodity logistics will be an advantage.
- Strong working knowledge of ERP and TMS systems such as Odoo, along with reporting tools like Excel dashboards, Google Sheets, and BI platforms.
- Ability to assess cost per ton, fuel usage, downtime, and route efficiency using data.
- Understanding of local and national transport rules, licensing requirements, and safety standards.
- Capability to allocate resources effectively across owned fleets, hired trucks, and contractors.
- Demonstrated success in improving operational KPIs such as OTIF, fleet utilization, and transport cost efficiency.
- High integrity, strong accountability, and careful attention to detail.
- Willingness to travel frequently between hubs, warehouses, and partner locations.
- Comfort and readiness to work in rural areas for long periods.
- A valid driving license is required; a motorcycle license will be considered an added advantage.
